Scar Tissue is another Rock’n’Roll Memoir which I didn’t listen to until 2025 even though it came out in 2004. One would think that I should be a fan of the Red Hot Chili Peppers based on the age of Anthony Kiedis 63 and my age 60, but I think of them as a more youth-oriented band. The only reason I was even willing to try this book out is because it was free with Spotify. Once I began listening I was drawn in immediately.
In the book by Vladimir Nabokov, Lolita was reported to have a dual nature innocent but vulgar. This is how I see Anthony Kiedis. On one hand he seems like the nicest most considerate person who’s always thinking of his friends and putting others first. On the other hand, he does terrible things to women then discarding them once he’s tired of them. And even after all this time (like David Lee Roth) Anthony Kiedis has still not settled down with the right woman and maybe he never will.
His reckless behavior started at an early age with jumping into a swimming pool and breaking his back. Perhaps chronic pain from so many injuries has led him to increase his use of substances. But it’s also possible that the use of substances caused him to have even more of these injuries and freak accidents such as falling off the stage.
But one absolutely cannot be angry at him. He’s so sweet and pure. I admire this spiritual advice. Anthony Kiedis connected with the spirit world; he even met with the Dalai Lama. This should have been enough to make him stay sober but it did not.
At the end of the book I really wished it had continued up until the present day because I want to know if Anthony Kiedis will continue the same pattern. His unfortunate pattern was to go to a hotel room and use drugs for a few days. Comically, the hotels all treat him like a Rock God and never question his behavior. Police officers pull him over and anyone else would have been busted, but the police officers are so intimidated by his celebrity that they apologize to him. You might think that he’s lucky, but it’s actually a curse that he’s never held to accountability about his behavior. This is a fantastic book. It’s very entertaining and I have high praise for the reader Rider Strong. This book review is better late than never. I really hope some sort of sequel will be written.
Updated: I found this Reddit Post that says Anthony Kiedis remains sober. I believe it.
