First of all, you will need to find your relatives in American that cost $20 dollars per month, but naturally you probably have relatives in other parts of the world, so now you pay 34 dollars a month. Once you agree to pay that much you may as well add 10 more dollars to get the full deluxe package at 44.99, and it may go up, so let us say it costs 45 dollars a month to find your relatives or to look find out if your friends have died using the social security death index, that was free, but they stole it, and sold it back to us. The price is hidden so deeply in the AncestryDNA website, that it took me half an hour to find it. So, I am posting it here for everyone to read, as of Sunday, August 26, 2018, the price of finding your relatives on AncestryDNA is $45 per month, which adds up to $540 dollars per year, and let us say you have to wait 10 years for your relatives to sign up to AncestryDNA. The cost of find your relative is now $5400 dollars for ten years, but what if it takes longer? (Don’t lose your relatives.) What if you never find your relatives? There is no guarantee you will find them, if they never sign up. Maybe with a money back guarantee, it would be more reasonable. If you don’t find your relatives in 10 years you get your money back? I could see maybe five dollars a month or a flat fee to have your name in a database in case your relatives turn up, but this is just too expensive.
So, thank you AncestryDNA for all the people you kept apart from each other with that pricing. As Burroughs would probably say, relatives will only cause you grief in the end.
Kristen DiMera (Eileen Davidson) has been replaced by Stacy Haiduk. Stacy Haiduk did a great job as Susan Banks. In fact, she was better than Eileen Davidson as Susan Banks. I am not trashing Stacy Haiduk, but she can not play Kristen. I would be perfectly fine with Stacy Haiduk continuing to play Susan Banks forever, and she would probably do a great job with the Nun character Sister Mary Moira. However, the Nun is seldom used on the show. Stacy Haiduk has very good comedic timing, and that is something very hard get. One either has a knack for it, or one does not. Stacy Haiduk does not have the acting range to pull off Kristen. She fails to understand the character of Kristen. Kristen is not a comic book type villain. She has been hurt many times by John rejecting her for Marlena again and again. I watched all of that. John was actually married to Kristen at one point. I bet Stacy Haiduk did not even watch the old footage or if she did she did not really understand how to play Kristen. The character’s motivation is very complex. Stacy Haiduk looks nothing like Eileen Davidson, and her voice is wrong for the part. I can’t see anything of Real Kristen in Fake Kristen. Stacy Haiduk will always be Fake Kristen to me. If Real Kristen was to pull a gun, she would do it with a slight bit of humor in a sort of intense, yet fun insanity. Stacy Haiduk is playing Fake Kristen completely flat and needs work on getting Kristen correctly if she is going to continue in the role or I may (once again) have to go on a what would now be my fourth strike of not watching Days. My third strike happened around the Ben Weston Cierra plot. It was not that it was so terrible, but all the other things going on at the same time, were not interesting to me. Brady and Eric do not move me at all. Usually I fast forward such bad acting away on the DVR, but when I call a strike I don’t even watch the episode, I read the summary and delete the episode unwatched, so the commercial sponsors don’t get profit by me even passing their ads in fast forward mode. The whole set up behind having the show is to make profit for the network. The profit comes from the ads. The only way to take control of TV Programs and get shows that we like to watch is to control the ads. If we hate the show, but still watch or even fast forward, the advertisers have won their objective. There will no motivation for the networks, producers, directors and writers to change the content of TV programs. The actors are not to blame because they can’t control the plot or the script. Back in the 70s we were forced to watch Sitcoms with laugh tracks, because we had no way to change what was on TV. Then in the 80s, Aaron Spelling made programs that we liked to watch, but geniuses like him are few and far between. I am very grateful for Aaron Spelling, and all the hours of happiness I got from watching his programs. Days of Our Lives was at its best under head writer James E. Reilly. He created the entire Kristen, Susan, Mary complex. Those shows I wished I had saved them on video tape, and I would happy to buy DVDs or whatever they wanted me to pay for with them. But when they started reshowing Days on Bravo, they started in 2011 which was one of the lowest points of the show.
Updated September 2, 2018
According to the following link Eileen Davidson is going to play Susan on November 2, and does this mean Stacy Haiduk will continue as Kristen?
Eileen Davidson is the only person who can play Kristen DiMera, but I am sure a number of actresses can play Susan. Stacy Haiduk is doing a very good job as Susan. I don’t understand what the producers, writers, casting agents are thinking, with this complete disaster of a plotline. The Brady in the hotel room was completely ridiculous. I assume that since Kristen and Paul fell out the Salem Inn window on Friday, Paul will die which will be how he exists the shows. Paul was slated the leave the show, and so was Steve. At least Sami is back, if only briefly.

I have been watching fake Kristen and she seems to be improving or maybe she is growing on my a bit more. It was shock of finding out that it was not Eileen Davidson playing Kristen and Susan that was really upsetting. I read on another soap blog that Eileen Davidson refused the role of Kristen, but I can’t verify that is true. I was aware she had quit Young and Restless, so I thought it was her playing Susan. I would to hear if Eileen Davidson refused the role. Kristen does not have very much screen time, and I feel Eileen Davidson could have fitted it in. If she refused the role I would like to know why.
This is my review of Parkview Mobile Estates in Palm Springs, California. I am not 55 years old yet, but I have been there to look at it at least three times. The view of the mountain is incredible, and each house in unique looking. I think the floor plans are all difference. I tried to reach out to a real estate agent who claimed on You Tube he was selling the houses, but he refused to let me tour one. So, I have never been inside one of the houses. There are not trailers or boxy looking homes. They look like small houses. Parkview Mobile Estates has a clubhouse and a pool. The property is build on a slope with the higher part closer to the mountain. This could be an issue for people with limited mobility, who want to live at Park View Mobile Estates. I also read online that the lease is up in 2027. I don’t know what that means. Will be park be removed to make way for something else like condos? Still, this is the prettiest of all the Palm Spring Parks. There are a few others, such as Safari Park, one can consider looking at, before making such a big decision, to buy or not buy. There is a space rent, charged monthly even if you buy, and I believe it varies based on the individual house one buys in the park. The park management has to approve of all buyers. Buyers can not rent out their homes. There is hiking nearby, but it is very vertical hiking, and probably not obtainable if one has arthritis. Still the views are nice, even if one can’t hike. One will need a car to drive to Downtown Palm Springs for shopping. There is parking and garages at each of the homes, plus a visitor parking lot. The houses in the neighborhood with is called Tahquitz Canyon, Homes nearby are so expensive that Movie Stars have lived there. If you wish, google search and find the names of the Star Homes and their addresses. Most of the Stars don’t live in Palm Springs anymore. It’s fun to think you can live, for a reasonable price, near where the Stars of a bygone era once lived. Most of these famous Palm Springs inhabitants, such as Marilyn Monroe and Debbie Reynolds, are no longer with us.
I can’t say I know everything about collecting Japanese Import Bandai Sailor Moon Dolls. If I had lived in Japan or could speak Japanese or read it, I would know a lot more. I have started a sale and discussion group on Facebook about Sailor Moon Dolls. Anyone can join without having to answer silly questions, but if you post anything that is not about Sailor Moon Dolls or Figures you will be banned. One may post any sales on Ebay or from any other sales site or sell the dolls within the group to other members. I look at Ebay daily, and I post any Sailor Moon Dolls or Figures that good deals or very unusual. So if you are not interested in finding deals on Sailor Moon dolls be sure to turn off your notifications for the group. The group is called Sailor Moon Dolls.
I was able (in the 90s) to pick up various Sailor Moon dolls, when I lived in San Francisco, at local anime shops. I have two Mini Moon or Rini Dolls. There were a number of Chibiusa (Rini) Dolls released, but I only had access to one of the releases which was just a plain release with no extra outfits and no upgraded costumes. I would have bought those, but they never came to the stores in San Francisco. I bought the second Chibiusa Doll because, when I took the tiara off of the forehead of my first Chibiusa Doll, I noticed a yellow discoloration caused by the tiara. I could not get the mark off, so I decided the only solution was to buy a second Chibiusa Doll. The pink earrings that look like a metal caused damage to the dolls ears. Both of my Chibiusa Dolls have earring damage. I can’t understand the reason for having the tiara and the head holes. It is not really a tiara or it would sit on top of her head. It is more like a visor or sunglasses. It is a piece of metal that fits on the forehead, and does not fall off by the magic of animation. Yet, she can throw the tiara as part of an attack. I hate the tiaras, and the head holes they created. That is why I worked on different ways to pretty up the sad tiara situation.
I have Uranus and Neptune, but they are trademarked 1993. I think 1993 was the year Bandai trademarked the body, but not the year the dolls were created. I have two Uranus Dolls and one is slightly taller than the other. One has no visible bangs, and you can see the head holes left by the tiara. The other has bangs that cover up the head holes, and look pretty goods for this reason. I don’t like dolls with bangs, very much because bangs obscures their faces when I am trying to take a facial close up photo. The Uranus Doll (shown above in pink) has replaced earrings with real gold earrings and gold backed earrings in the holes from the tiara. The Uranus and Neptune Dolls are the Beauty Change Dolls which came with cheap looking outfits made with felt bows, but then also came with a set of breakaway street clothes. My doll hobby is to dress my dolls in outfits and take photos. I always put away, and I never display. Dust and dirty settle on the dolls, and light even electric light bulbs decrease the color of the dolls faces, and cause the hair to lose shiny. The light causes the plastic to decay more quickly. The minute plastic dolls are created (just like on the day a person is born), the clock begins to tick on the process of plastic decay. Plastic is made up of molecules that hold together. Time, light and temperature fluctuations cause the plastic to break down faster. Sunlight is more damaging them artificial light, but both are damaging. If I was to display in a doll cabinet I would keep the room dark all day with black out curtains and only turn on the light when I was in the room.
I have a set of wings that are pink, so I have a Sailor Moon Doll from a later date. I think she is the Sailor Moon Doll from the 3rd Season which is called Sailor Moon Super.
I had issues with the outfits on dolls staining the plastic, so I took off the outfits. The rematching of each outfit on the doll would be difficult. In fact, I have tried and sort of given up. I can’t tell which Sailor Outfits came with which doll. I use my saved online photos of the dolls never removed from the boxes to match up each doll to her outfit. I did not take photos of each doll before I opened the boxes, and I did not save the boxes. I did not have a digital camera in the 90s. I was collecting so many dolls, that I would have had a house filled with boxes! If I had a digital camera or even a camera phone, I could have taken pictures of them on the sleeves at the stores. I wish I had documentation of what they sold at Japan Town. I wish I had taken photos of each doll in the box before I removed her and recycled the boxes. I have to rely on my memory. I assume they also sold these imported dolls in other major cities. They may have come to New York, Chicago or Miami. There is a Japan Town in Los Angeles, as well. If I had the funds, I would have traveled around the country looking for these dolls in the 90s. There was no way for me to order the dolls from Japan. I noticed on Google Shopping they have a few of the dolls in boxes, but often when you click the doll was sold years ago. These ghost doll pictures are a sort of click bait. One tries to find the dolls, and they remain elusive.
I have also a complete set of the Amazoness Quartet, two Chibiusa Dolls (both the same), and one of the Saturn Dolls that were a smaller size.
I did a lot of changes on the Amazoness Dolls. I swapped their earrings with real gold ones. I took down the hair of some of them, because I thought the hair was going to be damaged. The Amazoness Quartet were part of the Dead Moon Circus along with their male counter parts, Tiger’s Eye, Hawk’s Eye and Fish Eye. The males were called the Amazon Trio, but they were never made into dolls. I was sure the Amazon Trio had been killed by a clown, but now I am reading that they were saved on the Sailor Moon Wikia. I did not see that happen in the series. I don’t like it much, so I hardly ever rewatch it. In the episode it looked like “saving”, but the last shot is of them being dead animals. In general, each season of Sailor Moon declined. from The first season which was the best season to the fifth season the worse. The third season was a little better than the second season, but each season did progress toward being more dark, depressing, less fun and less entertaining for children. The Amazoness Quartet were friends of Chibiusa. They were the same height as Chibiusa, but they were little adults. It turned out they had been mislead by the master villain of season four called Zirconia, who looked like an evil Yoda. Since the Amazoness Quartet were not really evil, they are saved and become normal humans, similar to the fate of the Ayakashi Sisters in season two. However, most of the Sailor Moon Villains are evil and are killed. Even the villains that are not really evil and wish to become good are still often killed. They are killed either by the current master villain or by another junior villain who is ambitious and wants to take their place. They are never killed by Sailor Moon herself or one of the Sailor Scouts. Sailor Moon’s power is only to save and heal. The fate of the character matters when I am buying a doll. The character’s personality does factor into the decision to buy a doll. I found a strange theory online. Each Amazoness Doll is a daughter of one of the Sailor Scouts. Since Chibiusa is Sailor Moon’s daughter, I would say by hair color the blue haired girl would be Sailor Mercury’s daughter, the Green Haired Doll would have to be Juniper’s Daughters, the red-haired doll would be Mars’s Daughter, and the pink haired girl would by default be Venus’s Daughter.
The dolls marked Korea are really different from the ones marked China. The eyes are rounder and smaller on the Korean Dolls, the plastic is lighter and more translucent. The skin color on the China marked dolls is pink or peach. The Korea dolls are usually shorter, but this is not always the case. I noticed the differences as I was in the buying process, and unboxed the dolls. I have three Sailor Mercury dolls, but the all of the boots for these bandai dolls have been lost or stolen. I still have the shoes for the Venus and at at least one pair of shoes for Mars, and one pair for Jupiter. The boots are problematic. It is hard to get them on without risking damaging the feet by over squeezing, but still I wish I had the parts as they are smaller than the Irving dolls boots, and would not easy or even possible to replace without buying new in the box dolls creating, another storage of boots. I could maybe use one pair to photograph the dolls one at a time, but the Mercury boots are not really that nice enough for me to bother with this scheme for replacing them. I may also be missing some of the Mercury outfits. It’s all very troubling. I don’t know I had a party and people came and stole them or what happened. I use to have an anime party at my house, and one day a Sanrio Backpack was missing from my closet. I developed a theory that some of the guests were stealing small anime related items. Note: I should of had a storage space back then or a way to lock up the collection. Updated: I found three pairs of Mercury boots, but the issue was the made in Korea dolls did not have the white line on the top of the boots and the color was too dark. These boots became mixed up with other boots for dolls like Takara Jenny. That is why I could not find them, but I have since changed my storage system to store all the Sailor Moon clothes and accessories with the dolls, and not in separate shoe storage boxes. But only one of the boots really looks like Mercury boots. But, they can share the correct pair, one at a time. I want take group pictures soon.
I wondered if I liked the China Dolls or the Korean Dolls more. At first, I thought the China dolls were my favorites, they were better quality. As time went on I found the Korean Dolls to be more endearing. So, I made an effort to get more of them. In May of 2004 I found more of the Korean Dolls on Ebay in the boxes. The boxes had been opened, and the seller played with the dolls, but then stuck them back in the boxes. These dolls did have some damage on them, but I bought them anyway. I only noticed the damage after opening them. The Venus for example had a huge gross yellow stain on her dress. I think a cat peed on it. The stain did come out when I washed the dress. The set of dolls I got on Ebay were called Suki Suki and the name means street clothes. They did not come in Sailor Costumes, and unlike the Beauty Change line and the Seifuku line they did not come with a second outfit in the box.
The Ebay Seller who sold me the complete set of Suki Suki dolls in 2004 is one of the Ebay Horror Stories. I waited for the dolls to come for two weeks. Then I asked her, where are the dolls, and did you send them yet? She wrote back, she had already sent them, but she had not sent them. I waited another week. Now a month had passed. The dolls were coming from the USA to the USA, so there was no way the dolls were coming. I wrote again, and told her the dolls were still not here. She did not even answer. I waited four more days. Back then there was no protection system. I decided the dolls were never coming, so I left her negative feedback. Immediately, she gets back to me complaining, and then the dolls came. The postman left them on the porch, because she had used the cheapest shipping. In an urban environment in San Francisco, there was good chance they could have been stolen. But, all things considered, I wanted to take back the negative feedback. I told her, I would do it. Ebay would not let me take it back. Back then there was no way for a seller to leave me negative feedback in return. She claimed she was “out of town” or she would have replied. I know she was really like, “I am not even going to reply to this whiny person”, and she had shipped the dolls two weeks after she said she did, and over one month past the time of the sale. I thought about those dolls not coming everyday for a month. It was very stressful and upsetting. There was no way to track the package. I put in a lot of effort to collect the Bandai Japanese dolls, and then to keep them nice.
I can’t read the writing on the boxes, so I assume the Korean Dolls were a budget version sold in other parts of Asian, and maybe in Japan at less exclusive retail outlets. But, I had to pay the same price for the Korean Dolls as for the better quality China Dolls. The discount did not apply to Americans. As more time passed I only saw the Irwin Dolls on Ebay, so many of them it was impossible to find the Japanese Bandai Dolls anymore. They were lost in a sea of Irwin Dolls. There is some weight to the contention that Irwin did not make any dolls, but merely marketed them. If I had the Irwin Dolls I could look at the trademarks, and see if they say Irwin or Bandai. But, I have seen them now on Ebay, but it takes time to sort out the Japanese Imports from the others. Most sellers don’t know which they are putting online, so finding them is very time-consuming. Note: I did not have any issues with Sailor Mars’ hair falling out. When I got my Suki Suki Mars, I felt the hair had been damaged, but now I think that is the way the hair was made. The hair is wooly and if you pull the hair, because you are trying to comb it, it will fall out. You can’t comb the hair when the hair is dry, and you have to add some type of oil product to make the hair able to be combed. You need to use a large toothed comb or a Barbie Brush from the 90s. Any 90s boxed doll came with one of these free brushes, and you even buy them individually one Ebay. I fixed my Sailor Mars Hair and the hair still looks great 20 years later, when I opened my dolls and looked at them again.
I got the doll pictured below at Good Will to test out the Irwin Dolls, but her hair was trashed, so I let this doll go.
I think this is one of the earlier versions of Sailor Moon, but she also could have been Sailor Moon 2000, because since I had a digital camera after 2001, I took a lot of photos of this doll in different outfits before I got rid of her. I did some retouching on the photo to make her look better.
They sold the Mini Dolls in Japantown, because they did not sell very well, they were reduced to clearance prices in the end. There have been many sets of mini dolls released since the 90s. There is a newer set of Mini dolls that look much better. The first line of Mini Dolls lacked a neck, and had heads that were too big. The Irwin Mini dolls have molded glove and molded shoes. I was able to view and see the worst of all The Japanese Imports, because they would buy the dolls that did not sell out in Japan and offer them to the Americans who came to Japantown. This may have given me a somewhat wrapped opinion, that the dolls often are unattractive. I have seen really nice boxed dolls online. But, those sell right away. What I am seeing is the effect of all the better looking dolls selling, and leaving unattractive or damaged dolls online. Also some of the nicer dolls that are cost a lot of money remain online. Amazoness Dolls list for about 500 dollars unopened in the box, but how often do they sell? Regular Moon as shown about lists for about $50 dollars, if she is in the box.
They were several lines, of dolls I never saw or even heard of such as dolls that came with key chains, lighted dolls, and dolls on spinning bases. I wonder why for season 3 they created Professor Tomoe dolls, but not Mimete. They created at least two versions of the Emerald Doll and Rubius, but not Malachite and Zoisite or Molly and Nephrite. Why create Rubius and not The Ayakashi Sisters? I did not like Rubius at all. I thought he behaved like a pimp. This was a very bad influence on children. I used to go to Japantown in the 90s twice a week because there was a Sushi Boat place, that I liked to eat at. But, the Sushi Boat place was sold to new owners in about 2005 or 2006 and after that the quality of the food became very poor. I stopped eating there. The Sushi Boat place failed, and has now been shut down. I noticed some of the Villain Dolls came to Ebay, but I did not want to start buying them. If you buy one you may feel the need to complete the set. It’s just too hard, and I was collecting other dolls in the 2000s. I noticed an Emerald Doll years ago, who was one of the best looking, but I thought she was over priced. The voice of Emerald, Kirsten Bishop, also played the voice of Zoisite.
The Sailor Star Light Dolls
I have two of the Sailor Star Lights dolls, Star Maker (brown hair) and Star Healer (white hair) trademark date 1996. I did not buy Star Fighter (navy blue hair). My favorite doll was Healer, but I also bought Maker as an afterthought.
There was only one set of Star Light Dolls ever made and all of them are Beauty Change. Beauty Change dolls come in Uniforms, but have regular clothes that break away with velcro so the dolls can “transform” . The Star Light Dolls had what looked like lab coats that came inside the box. Maker’s lab coat was brown and Healer’s Lab Coat was Grey. I have no idea why, I think they got confused with Season 3 and the Death Busters. Fighter had a blue lab coat included, as I recall, and shown in online photos. Some of the villains wore lab coats in Season 3. More likely, the lab coats were cheaper to make then break away street clothes. What they really needed were the suits that they wore as the band called the Three Lights. Suits are difficult to make which is why Ken is so lacking in suits. The Sailor Star Lights were also created as mini dolls and/or dream pocket dolls.
The anime character Star Fighter had an obnoxious personality. The creator of Sailor Moon, the artist Naoko Takeuchi, did not write/draw them as being men who changed into women. As you may know, in the final season of Sailor Moon, Star Fighter is dating Serena, until it is revealed that he is really a Sailor Soldier in Episode 24. This episode is one of my favorites. The big reveal takes place on an airplane flight. The Japanese Original used the word Soldier, but the Americans used the word Scout, which makes the characters more like Girl Scouts in a troop, rather than soldier fighting a war. Child soldiers are very depressing and morally wrong. Anytime a country drafts children under 18 it means the country is losing the war, and has run out of older men. If one watches the show in Japanese the word Soldier is heard because they like to used English words often in the show. The words they used to transform and the attack words are English Words. For example Chibiusa, uses the word “Pink Sugar Heart Attack.” In English it means a heart attack called by too much sugar and weight gain, but in Japanese it means Chibiusa uses small pink hearts to attack. The hearts fly through the air and hit the victim forcing them to retreat. I have noticed a Live Action Series called Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. This straight to video show has not been released in the USA but there is a free fan sub download, but I have not downloaded because I feel uncomfortable downloading without paying an official channel. Short clips from Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon are available on Youtube. I read the correct translation of the word Soldier is supposed to be Guardian, but I do not believe it. In the anime I can hear them say the word Soldier in the Japan Version of the original series. In the opening credits of the first series there is always a short recap in which Sailor Moon explains in Japanese how she became a Sailor Soldier known as Sailor Moon. The outfit that are worn in Guardian Sailor Moon look similar to the foil dresses that I have found on many of the imported dolls. I feel this is the best thing about Guardian Sailor Moon. I can see people wearing the dresses that are shown on the dolls. (Please skip ahead for a look at the foil dresses later in this article. ) There was also a musical that was performed in Japan about Sailor Moon. The Musical looks very interesting. I would like to be able to propose a DVD or watch the Musical on service like Amazon Video or Netflix. The Musical started at season 1 and worked all the way to season five, and had characters playing the Sailor Star Lights, but I believed they are only in their female forms in the musical, which is what the created and artist wanted. There was also a classic music concert about Sailor Moon in 2017. I have seen some items for sale that commemorate Sailor Moon Concert on ebay. I remember a primitive early live action sailor moon in which the actors looks like they wearing silly wigs that was for sale in the 90s, but I don’t think this is same show as Guardian which looks very well produced on a standard budget. Having the cats appear as stuffed plush toys works for me, because it is hard to train cats to do certain things. I am sure this increased the sale of Plush Cat Luna and Artemis Toys.
The reason why Serena and Star Fighter should not date is Serena is supposed to marry Tuxedo Mask (Darien), to create her daughter Chibiusa (Rini). I don’t want to say that the reason is because of the dual gender of the Star Lights. When she finds out Serena gets a funny look on her face, and they never date again after that. What if Serena had dumped Darien for Star Fighter? Would this be a good plot turn or a poor one? The whole thing was only in the anime, and not what the creator and artist Naoko Takeuchi wanted. Sailor Moon Crystal is supposed to be what she really wanted, but they have not made season five into Crystal, so it’s hard to say how she would rewrite the anime to fit her ideals. I don’t want to be intolerant, and I think that having these characters helped to build tolerances for gender changing. That is why I want to make it clear, that the reason for the break up was Tuxedo Mask.
It may have worked better if the male Star Light singing group, summoned up female counterparts, instead of changing into females? They could have had two sets of dolls for both male and female Star Lights. I have the idea that female dolls could be the sisters of the Star Light males. Maybe this idea would even make it into Sailor Moon Crystal? I spend hours looking up the Sailor Star Lights, and now I have a few more things to add to this post. I think the Star Lights spend all their times as males and only transformed into females to fight evil. When they go around as women, they are always on business missions. They don’t just hang out as women. This is the opposite of what other people are suggesting. My evidence is based on the series. There are many scenes of them as males where they are practicing for their singing group of Pop Idols. The group is called The Lights or The Three Lights. In an earlier season Sailor Venus becomes a singing Idol by entering a contest. Singing Idols are very big in Japan. The Star Lights attend Serena’s school as males. This gives Star Fighter a chance to pursue Serena romantically, and I think this whole concept is wrong. What is a grown man doing in high school, and just how old are the Sailor Star Lights? Darien is also too old for Serena, but the answer was they waited until she was 18. I am going to guess that Star Lights could be in between 18 and 22 years old. Season Five goes too far, and it’s too adult for children to watch. If they had toned it down, maybe it would have been more accepted and translated into an English Dub? There are more adult topics in season five, that you should look up on your own. I don’t want to get into a long discussion on them, because this post is about dolls. Other bloggers cover these topics in greater detail. Look for a blog post called why they won’t dub season five into English, under the name setting the record straight.
The Star Light Dolls love to be redressed in better outfits. They are thinner then 90s Barbie, so I dressed Healer in a Teen Skipper Fashion Avenue. In the second photo Healer wears a handmade Princess Dress and Maker wears a Pink Mattel Barbie Reproduction Dress of Enchanted Evening. They have new wave hair styles, the ponytail in back is very thin.
Some of the later season dolls had plastic neck rings and are marked 1995 China. I only have one of those neck ring dolls, and she is Mars. I may have been limited by what was available, but I made it a mission to go at least weekly and always check and buy what I saw that was new. I don’t know how they decided to offer some of the dolls, but not all of them. It may have been that some of the dolls had not sold well, and the owners of the shop got those items discounted? Who would not buy each and every doll, so as to have a complete set of each of them? I don’t have them, so I assume that I could not get all of them. I also took myself on trips to every possible anime store I could find out in the Avenues of the Sunset and Richmond Districts hoping for different Sailor Moon Dolls. I traveled to a now defunct Anime Shop in Fremont, but I only picked up a Venus Doll there. I also went to Japantown in San Jose, but I can’t remember finding and Sailor Moon Dolls there. I liked dolls that were novel and the disappointment of seeing only the same dolls, I already had day after day year after year filled me with despair. This makes me believe I did not have access to complete set of all of them, but I am not a completist. I chose not to buy Pluto or Tuxedo Mask.
You may be asking where can I buy these dolls on Ebay? I found them to be still available, under the category of Sailor Moon Collectibles Figures or other Other Sailor Moon Collectables as well as under Dolls and Bears. All the Star Light Dolls and also the Figures are for Sale in that category. I don’t if there is a translation issue going on, and the Japan sellers don’t all list under dolls. It cost extra money to list a item in two categories, so check all the listing in all the categories before buying as the prices vary tremulously from thousands of dollars to a couple hundred dollars.
Pluto Doll Controversy
I have some of the Beauty Change Dolls, but not all of them. I would have liked them all. I recognize the outfits, that came with the dolls so I know some of them are called Beauty Change, but the English Word Beauty Change do not appear on the boxes. I would like to have had the Beauty Change Pluto. That doll is better than Standard Pluto, and the extra outfit is really cute. Did Beauty Change Pluto Dolls just sell out, or if the stores just did not get them in stock? Pluto did not sell very well. I don’t know if it was because of her personality. Her personality was cold and aloof. Pluto should have been taller than the other dolls, but she was the same size and looks just like them, but with darker skin. Pluto hung around unsold for years in Japantown. They must have put her on special clearance before she sold. I am going to speculate the dolls that came to Japantown were what was unsold and unpopular in Japan. The Pluto Doll turned out to be a racist doll. Maybe because the Pluto doll did not sell with darker skin, they created at least two more Pluto Dolls that are taller, which is correct, but they changed the skin to white.
Many different series and lines of dolls were created too many to keep track of
I have very few of the upgraded and “better” dolls. I have multiple copies each of the inner sailor scouts. Mars and Jupiter both have brown hair. In general Jupiter has lighter brown hair and green eyes, but it is easy to confuse these two dolls. I don’t know why Mars would not be given black hair. I have problems telling Moon From Venus unboxed and undressed. They are the same doll with the same makeup. The only difference is the way the hair is packaged. The only way to tell is to check the back of the head and look and if the hair falls into pigtails or into a ponytail. I don’t know if this was laziness on the part of the company. Why they would not make more unique features on the dolls? In the anime, it is also impossible to tell Moon from Venus other than her outfit and hair style. The US Mars Doll has lovely black hair. Mars also sold the fastest of any of the dolls. It hardest to get the Mars Doll, but I heard in Japan Mercury is the most popular character. Mercury is not the most popular doll due to her short hair. Also Mercury should have been shorter than Moon, and Jupiter should have been taller than Moon. All the basic scouts are uniform height within any given series. But the series or lines have height variations that seem random. The Starlights are taller, and the Amazoness Dolls and Saturn are smaller.
Later Irwin Dolls and Villain Dolls into the early 2000s
There is a lot of inconsistency. I have seen some great looking Chibiusa looks and some not very good Chibiusa dolls in boxes posted online.
The only one I have of these doll is Princess Serenity or Sailor Moon. I really dropped the ball on this one, because I did notice or buy the 11.5 Irwin 2000 series. I don’t know they had not come into stores near me, and I stopped going to Toys R Us in the 2000s. I only ended up with one of the these dolls, because I stopped by a Toys R Us, as random chance, and the dolls were on clearance, but they did have the Scouts only the one Doll, which I bought and the Sailor Moon with Chibiusa, which I found a picture of online. I did see this doll in the stores, but I did buy it.
I like the later Giochi Preziosi Dolls, but I was not able to see them in stores. I would have had to buy them on Ebay, and I had enough Sailor Moon Dolls already, so I don’t have any Giochi Preziosi Dolls. It’s easy to find out information about the later dolls, but the 1993 Dolls were Pre Internet, and very little information is known about them. Before the era of digital cameras people did not take very many photos of dolls because film was too expensive to develop. It would have been wasteful to take a lot of doll photos, and most people only took family photos. But, I would occasionally take a doll photo in the 80s and 90s.
The Talking Dolls
The Talking Dolls were even more expensive the the regular dolls. I did not buy them due to the increased cost. But, the Talking Dolls were good-looking dolls, but not so overwhelming attractive that I had to buy them. I don’t know how well they talked or what they said. I don’t like dolls that talk or light up because there is a chance was something going wrong with them. The metal can react to the plastic. Do not leave any metal parts on your dolls. Sailor Moon’s tiaras stain the doll faces, so I took them all off, but I saved them in bead box organizers. Taking off the tiara leaves holes in the dolls head. So, I did some experiments with earrings for babies that were real gold. Real gold is safe. But, the best way is to use the clone stamp in Photoshop and remove the holes that way.
Dresses made with metal foil accents
Some of the doll had outfits with details looked like gold aluminum foil. I have three of those dresses or fuku. The foil sailor costumes were from the 3rd and 4th series called Super and Super Stars, and Season Five is called Sailor Stars. I have found the name of my Saturn doll, and she is Excellent Team Super Sailor Saturn from 1995. The Beauty Change Saturn has a different head dress, and a second outfit. But, I think she may be the same doll. There are three on them in the box on Ebay right now, but they are expensive.
The USA Sailor Moon Dolls by Bandai
I have the first set of US Sailor Dolls made by Bandai. The hair is longer and better quality the Japanese Bandai Dolls. Mercury has both black and blue hair, which is wrong. At least Mars has the right hair color black. The outfits are very high quality. The Dolls are larger about 12 inches tall. They can wear clothes for Jem and Holograms dolls and Mattel Barbie Clothes. This depends on the outfit. The Japanese Dolls are smaller than Barbie, and can wear clothes for smaller dolls like Skipper, but Barbie clothes will hang on them. I bought these dolls as a complete set, I did not have to hunt around to find them one at a time. It must have been 1993. I got them at Walgreens. Toys R Us did not even carry Sailor Moon Dolls, until much later. I wonder if Mattel insisted they only carry Mattel Dolls? I noticed a lack of clone dolls at Toys R Us. I had to look for Clone Dolls in Drug Stores and Super Discount Stores like Big Lots. Toys R US has now gone out of business. There is no need to constantly go to retail stores, if you can get the dolls you want online for less money. I usually never bought anything but Mattel Dolls in the 90s. I did find and buy two of the Beverly Hills 90210 Dolls in the early 90s, at Toys R Us. I thought the dolls were not very attractive, so I bought the best looking dolls on the series, Brandon and Brenda. These dolls were also made by Mattel. This is more evidence that only Mattel Dolls were at Toys R Us in California. I know if they had other dolls, I would have bought some of them.
I did not buy the later issues of US Sailor Scouts, because the only thing I could see different about them was the outfits. They full name of the doll was Deluxe Action Adventure Dolls. There was a second issue of the dolls with some corrections, to the outfits, but I did not buy the second editions.
There was an earlier Princess Serenity by Irwin who looked more primitive. At some point Irwin changed the face of Sailor Moon to a more attractive versions. I was stupid not to buy more of these dolls, when I could get them cheaply. I could have sold any extras, but I was living in a very small space with no storage room. It is bad to store dolls in the attic or in the basement. Moisture and temperature functions age the dolls and cause mold to begin to grow. But, how many dolls can fans of a show be expected to buy? There are so many characters, and there is so little space to keep dolls unless you live in Dallas Style Mansion. I wish they would stick to one release, but make the release a good-looking quality doll, instead of creating a glut of dolls, that even me (one of most loyal fans) can’t keep track or hope to collect them all. Almost all of these weird dolls were played with, and then thrown away or recycled hopefully. Very few were saved by collectors to later resell, because no one could foresee them going up in price. In the 90s, everyone bought Mattel Barbie and saved her in the box, thinking she would go up in price, but she went down in price.
Princess Serenity Dolls
This is what I get for not looking at my Sailor Moon dolls for so many years. I have two Serenity Dolls. One is larger like the USA Sailor. The other is smaller a Bandai Japan Doll. I am not sure if they ever made a Sailor Moon with a yellow forehead stamp, or if all the dolls with the stamp are Princess Serenity. This is my punishment for not keeping notes in the 90s. I may never know the answers. At any rate there is no different between Princess Serenity and Sailor Moon herself. Princess Serenity is Sailor Moon’s mother, but she looks exactly the same as Sailor Moon. The appearances of Sailor Mother’s in the anime, is in the past. When the plot begins, Sailor Moon’s mother’s sends Sailor Moon (her daughter) and all the moon princess (the Sailor Scouts to earth). When she does this is about 20 years old. Maybe she can not age, or always appears the perfect age? If someone can better explain this please email me or leave a blog comment. I do not appear however, to have any dresses for Princess Serenity. I have a Princess Serenity dress, that I found on eBay which is very similar, but not an official Princess Serenity dress. This makes me even more confused. If I had bought two Princess Serenity dolls in the 90s, I should have at least one dress. I would not have given away or thrown away any of the outfits for Sailor Moon Dolls. This could mean neither one of these dolls is Princess Serenity.
The rarest Sailor Moon Doll in my entire collection came to me by random chance. I was looking at dolls on Ebay, and I noticed a doll being sold as Korean Barbie. She had a trademark on her back that said Sonokong. I could see it in the seller’s photos, so I bought the doll. I was afraid she could be a Franken Doll. I assumed someone put a Bandai Head on a Sonokong body. Sonokong Dolls are very hard to find, and very expensive. This would be my first Sonokong Doll. When I got her home, she had a trademark on her neck that said SOK, and her head was not removable, so I know she must be a real doll. She did not come with an outfit, tiara or any of her accessories. She came dressed in Barbie Clothes. The Barbie Pink Tennis Shoes someone dressed her in had stained her feet slightly pink. But overall she is in great shape. Her hair has regular rubber bands, that are not decaying and falling off. I may redo her hair, in the future.
I put the Bandai USA Sailors on Ebay, because I have too many Sailor Moon dolls. I could redress her in one of those outfits. I was thinking about removing the USA dolls from the outfits, as the outfits are the best thing about the dolls. I saw that some of the USA Sailor Scouts had sold for about 15 dollars without the outfits. However, it won’t work, as this doll is slim as Japanese Sailor Moon. It’s too bad the USA Sailors have such large outfits. Those large outfits would fit Jem and the Holograms, but Jem and the Misfits dolls would look terrible as Sailor Moon.
I am posting these photos for ID purposes to help you, if you have a Sonokong Doll. This is not the big 17-inch doll, that doll is more like a figure. I saw photos of her in the box on other people’s blogs. You have to go look for the photos. I can’t post them due to that is someone else photo.
There is no way I can tell Sailor Moon From Sailor Venus as the Dolls are the same without the hair styling. I removed the hair styling to avoid damage to the hair. Sonokong Sailor Moon, I only got recently, and her hair has not yet been changed, but someone else changed the rubber bands. Rubber bands will not last 20 years, they will fall apart and sometimes cause damage to the hair or the doll. These dolls are over 20 years old and vintage. Note: I thought maybe Venus had pink lip color and Sailor Moon Red, but I have found on eBay Sailor Venus with red lip color. It would be easy they had a rule like that, they would follow, but things are random in terms of makeup and outfits.
” I see life as basically tragic and futile and the only thing that matter is making little jokes.”
The quote is found in an out of print book Inventing Wonderland by Jackie Wullschlager.
I was able to draw a connection between that quote and two early movies by Woody Allen Annie Hall 1977 (we need the eggs), Manhattan 1979, and Hannah and Her Sisters 1986. In the movie Hannah and Her Sisters, the character played by Woody Allen, whom I will refer as Woody Allen, wants to kill himself, because he does not know what happens in the afterlife. He reasons life is not worth living because we don’t know what the point of life is without knowing if there is an afterlife and if so what happens in the afterlife? He tries several religions, but they all fail him. He is ready to kill himself, but then he is cheered up by watching a Marx Brother’s Movie. In Manhattan 1979 he realizes what matters to him is not the sophisticated woman played by Diane Keaton, but the younger girl played by Mariel Hemingway. This was clearly the foreshadowing of worse thing to come. But, it was an Existential Crisis that caused Woody Allen to change his mind about which woman he wanted.
I recalled reading that Woody Allen studied things on his own beyond college, so he could impress women whom he was picking up. I thought this was rather crass, so I filed it away in my memory until later. Woody Allen complained in the movie Stardust Memories that everyone wanted him to just make more funny movies, but he could not due to his Existential Despair. There are a whole series of his funny movies that he made such as Take The Money And Run, Bananas, Sleeper, and Love and Death. But, his more profound movies will be more remembered Annie Hall, Manhattan, Hannah and Her Sisters.
The Existential Despair concept is hardly original, but at the time when I watched these movies it made accessible to me someone who had not studied much classical literature in spite of a liberal arts education. In college, each professor picks the works he wants his students to read and study. Clearly there are some huge gaps in my education. Why did none of them ever touch on Edward Lear? How could have lived more than 50 years knowing only the poem The Owl and the Pussycat which I assumed was a Mother Goose? The Owl and the Pussycat was written to cheer up a sick child, but after The Owl and the Pussycat Edward Lear poems take a sliding into some very depressing topics. “They went to sea in a Sieve” in the poem The Jumblies is about a huge family or group of people suffering from over population, but they don’t mind or notice or take any actions to correct this misfortune. Lear was said to come from a very large family of 21 children.
I do appreciate Woody Allen placing Existential Despair into his movies, even he copied them. For those people who did not go to college or somehow missed it, Woody Allen introduces the topic of Existential Despair. There are more reasons to consider Existential Despair than topic itself. Existential Despair is the best argument against materialism and endlessly striving to have more possessions while completely ignoring realities like aging, death and the death of our loved ones. No amount of material wealth or personal success can overcome the question of the afterlife. In the current state with of affairs with over population and climate change, we can’t just go on ignoring the diminishing environment we live in. But, one person can’t do anything about fossil fuels or the over use of plastics. This contributes to the dread of Existential Despair, because we know that future generations may have worse life than ourselves. In Victorian times people did not know these future truths. The invention of antibiotics in the 1920s changed the world for the better. People thought that each generation of children would become happier and better off with all the new medical sciences and technologies.
The point of education not to memorize facts, which you can look up online, but to have an overall structure of how to organize and process the information in such a way to make it useful. There should be a survey class in college for literature similar to the way art history is taught. An introductory art history course mentions all the big names, and then if one finds particular artists appearing they can go research them later on. The worst part about college is the pressure for time and the expense of college. Most people work part-time, and there is no time for the pursuit of further knowledge. You learn enough to pass each test, and then move on the next exam. Just keeping up with the classes is all one has time for. Things really need to change.
“Thought I’d something more to say” Time by Pink Floyd
Twin Peaks: Fire Walk with Me is a 1992 psychological horror film directed by David Lynch. It is a prequel to the television series Twin Peaks (1990–1991), created by Mark Frost and Lynch, who were also executive producers. The film revolves around the investigation into the last seven days in the life of Laura Palmer (Sheryl Lee), a popular high school student in the fictional Washington town of Twin Peaks.
Lauren is not sure if she wrote this review of the Twin Peaks Movie Fire Walk With Me or not. It sounds like she did write, but she does not remember writing it. Maybe she saved it from the web, but she looked for it online and it is not online anymore. If you find you wrote this review please email me, at once, I will take it down at once. Thank you for understanding. Lauren is losing her memories due to excess use of first generation allergy medication, which was due to her love of dogs and cats and her allergies to them. Lauren is a cat lady who has never said, no to a needy kitten or lost dog.
Review of Fire Walk With Me as written by Lauren. This is not a review of the whole movie, but just of the parts Lauren felt were worth commenting upon.
I saw the Movie Fire Walk With Me, and I have not been so disappointed since I had seen the first Star Trek Movie. I am going to break it down as to why, in spite of a brief appearance by David Bowie, the movie failed for me.
Sheryl Lee looked too old to play Laura Palmer. This fact was made even more apparent by the recasting of Donna as very young-looking girl. I thought the two could be older and younger sister. Sheryl Lee looked at least 22, and if they had kept Lara Flynn Boyle as Donna it would have added to the believability, making Laura look more in her target age of 18. It would have wrong to recast Laura Palmer, so I guess they did the best they could, but they could have selected an older looking Donna.
Audrey was one of my favorite characters, so I was disappointed, that she was not in the movie. I would have rather seen what had been planned for season three of the TV show that was not made. As it turns out Season Three was a comic book, called something like “Bob is from a planet made of creamed corn.” But this comic book was never released. I got this information from a You Tube Video which cleared up a lot of mysteries about Twin Peaks.
So, when I watched the You Tube Video I noticed that once again Audrey as played by Sherilyn Fenn has been railroaded. Not only was she not in the Movie, but when she was in the New Twin Peaks what happened to her character was extremely disappointing. I don’t know if why the romance between Agent Cooper resulted from Kyle MacLachlan being pressured by his girlfriend who was Lara Flynn Boyle (Donna), or maybe he just did not want the romance to work out? There was no reason why after a time had passed that the romance could not have later worked out. Lara Flynn Boyle was no longer dating Kyle MacLachlan, she had moved on with Jack Nicholson. I wonder if it was Kyle MacLachlan who made the call or was it Lynch? Sherilyn Fenn and Kyle MacLachlan were still attractive, but Lara Flynn Boyle seemed to have some sort of plastic surgery disaster. Older is not so bad, as very strange looking. I am not just saying this because I am older. I would have liked to have seen Lara Flynn Boyle in Twin Peaks, as I admired her work in Ally McBeal. I liked all the cast of Twin Peaks. I can’t think of any of them, whom I thought were not good actors. I have said, never again, another Twin Peaks, but I got to thinking that Lara Flynn Boyle and James Hurley played by James Marshall could have some story to tell. I would have liked them to have gotten married. Also Bobby Briggs could have married Shelly Johnson, after Leo was killed. This could have happened in the third season of Twin Peaks that was never made.
Sherilyn Fenn could have done a spin-off movie, but that never happened either.
Instead Sherilyn Fenn did a movie called Boxing Helena, which was horrible, but at least it was a dream. Jennifer Lynch made a movie that never would have been made if she was not the daughter of David Lynch. I can just imagine if she was a nobody, and she went around pitching the screen play for Boxing Helena. I did not see Boxing Helena at the time, because I knew it would be horrible.
There was none of the quirky qualities of the TV show in the movie. I think it was almost like the movie was playing to a different audience. Possibly those who liked the TV show, would not be fans of the movie, and maybe those who really liked the movie, did not come to the movie, as fans of the TV show. One does not need to have watched the TV show to enjoy the movie. The original Twin Peaks moved very quickly, but the New Twin Peaks moved very slowly or not at all. The show seemed to be standing still during the whole Dougie affair. There are four Agent Coopers. Agent Cooper the Good, Evil Cooper, Dougie, and the character who was Douglas Jones before he was turned into Dougie. All were played by Kyle MacLachlan.
There are four David Foster Wallaces in the Pale King. The first is a character named David Wallace who is a young man, the second is an older man who is named David Wallace, but he never appears, but is only talked about. Then there is the fictional author of the book also named David Wallace, and finally there is the real author of the book David Foster Wallace. The Pale King predates the New Twin Peaks. I am not saying, one is a copy of the other, but I just want to note that David Foster Wallace, did it all before David Lynch.
“The ease with which old garden pinks escape and multiply in the wild is proof of their tough constitution.”
Carnations are easy to grow if you have the right climate. They like a lot of sun ,and they do not like cool foggy weather. In San Francisco they will develop mold and fungus type of rots and die. The like rich soil as long as that soil is well-drained. The do not like clay soil. Create a soil made with sand and healthy compost, as well as some bagged soil mixes. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. They do not like humidity in the air. The dry summers of Northern California are ideal conditions for carnations. They may even do ok, in the dry air of the desert, but one would need to remove the desert soil and replace with normal garden soil or a healthy soil mix. The can be divided everything three years, just like some hostas. They may do better after division.
“Concerning the Bodyguard” by Donald Bartheleme is a short story told only as a series of questions. But, it’s not all as it appears to be. There is a hidden deeper meaning that tells a story. You could read the story, or if you to really have fun list to the podcast of the story read by Salman Rushdie for the New Yorker. If you click on this link, you can read or listen to a number of articles a month for free. In the past all the New Yorker Podcasts about Fiction were free to read. 😦
The first time I heard the story (read by Rushdie), I had not read the story. But afterwards I found and read the story, and over time I began to figure out the clues that create a more complex story. If you listen to Salman Rushdie talking about it also you will get more clues. The bodyguard seems to be more of chauffeur, as his job is mainly driving the man around. He never has to fight off bad guys as one would think, that is the job of a bodyguard.
Salman Rushdie is a great writer, but his biography (Joseph Anton: A Memoir ) leaves much to be desired. Written in third person, it is one of the most horrible books, I read/ listened to on audible. I could not even finish it. It was both boring and depressing at the same time. I was curious to learn about how Salman Rushdie had a Fatwa which is an order of death placed on him for written the book called The Satanic Verses in 1988.
I have not yet read The Satanic Verses, but it’s not that terrible a book. The only issue appears to be using the names of the wives of Mahmoud in an unclean way. But, if he had omitted that, the overall book may not have been so offensive. It is the story of two men. One represents God and one Satan. I am not really sure about that, but I trying to boil it down fast and easy. The God man gets killed, I believe, but the Satan man changes and becomes a good man. But, I don’t think it is something I would read. I did read and enjoy a few of Salman Rushdie story stories in the New York, but I have never finished one of the novels.
The story made me look into other words by Donald Bartheleme, but as Salman Rushdie points out on the podcast his other works are so strange that they can not be understood. Like Finnegans Wake which we discussed earlier on this blog, the stories can not be understood. I don’t know if there exists any books or articles to explain the stories, but one could try looking for them if one was interested. I also started to read Hiding Man: A Biography of Donald Barthelme but the author was only a vague acquaintance of Donald Barthelme, and the book did not have much insight.
I need to get a copy of The Age of the Pussyfoot on Kindle or Ibooks. The book is still out of print and only dusty old copies remain. I got the book from the library and since then it has been my favorite Frederik Pohl book. He started the book in October 1966, and it was published in 1969. But, the book is still not in digital format. I have been waiting since 2013 to get a copy of The Age of the Pussyfoot
Book Review With Spoilers
The main character, Forrester wakes up after being dead for a long time. He finds the world to be very different. He is attends a party where he meets his love interest. She is a woman with two children and no husband. He wants to love her, and he thinks he has money from the interest that build from his savings. Her makes love to her, but then he realizes that due to inflation he is no longer rich. So, he get different jobs to make money which is called credits, and are all controlled by a smart phone which is called a joy marker. The joy marker let you order anything you want and brings it to at once, but it is too easy to spend all your credits very quickly. If you go broke your Joy Marker (phone) shuts off, and you become a homeless person with no phone. You have to get more money to get your phone turned back on again. He goes homeless for a while, but then he works his way back to being with his girl friend and her children. The story ends with them all attending and encounter group in which they express rage in order to feel better. There is also a Martian, named Heinzlichen whom he has offended, in the most minor way, who is now trying to kill him. It is legal to kill anyone, because everyone can live forever, along as they have enough money. To be fixed up and brought back to life costs money, so only poor people have to die. Heinzlichen follows Forrester around like a comic master villain. Does name Heinzlichen indicted that he is a German Villain? I am not sure just how much of the book is supposed to be comically. It was not billed as being a parody like the Douglas Adams series The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, but it has many comical aspects to the novel. For example such as the children have no respect for Forrester, and he has to ask the children what should be doing, as he is so out of touch, due to coming back from the past.
This blog contains Spoilers for the books Ulysses and Infinite Jest
Preface: I ordered copy of a library book of Ulysses by James Joyce, but the print was too small to read. If I read small print, I will get a headache. The Kindle Edition costs is 99 cents, but it’s also free online at Project Gutenberg. Finnegans Wake is a mere $1.99 on the Kindle system. Finnegans Wake is still under copyright. I wondered why the price was so low? I started to read Finnegans Wake and I found out, that as I had heard, it can’t be understood because there are words that are not English, but they are not really Irish words either. They are an insane language. More about this later on in the essay.
Can James Joyce’s writing be compared to David Foster Wallace’s?
Inspired by the supposition that Molly Notkin the character from Infinite Jest is based on Molly Bloom, I decided to look at Ulysses by James Joyce to see if there are similarities to Infinite Jest. I could not find very much to suggest that the character Molly Notkin is similar to Molly Bloom. However, I could find in Ulysses some ideas that are seen in Infinite Jest. I read about David Foster Wallace and his mother Sally. When DFW was a boy, (I am not sure how old,) he and his mother would read Ulysses together. As I continued to read, I decided the topic could be expanded to comparing James Joyce with David Foster Wallace.
First of all we need to note that Ulysses by James Joyce is based on the Odyssey, but Infinite Jest is based on Hamlet. Both books are somewhat loosely based on these classical works.
The names Molly and Kate
One of the main characters in Infinite Jest is a depressed woman named Kate Gompert. Her name was taken from a girl Wallace knew when he was completing on the Tennis Circuit. The real Kate Gompert sued David Foster Wallace because she felt the character of Kate was damaging to the clean image she wanted to maintain as a tennis player. The judge did not agree, and she lost her claim for damages. I wonder why DFW wanted to use her name. I assume there is some bad history between them, but we will never really know why he did. I doubt if the real Kate Gompert knows why. Maybe he just liked the name or maybe he wanted to get her attention? The character Kate Gompert does not play tennis, and is not similar to the real Kate Gompert. Most of the characters in Ulysses are based on real people. James Joyce changed the names, but keys to whom the names correspond with can be found online.
There is a character named Katey in Ulysses, and this reminded me of the name Gately. Gately is the second protagonist in Infinite Jest. He became more of the a main character as Hal’s role in the book began to recede.
The mental illness connection
James Joyce had a daughter named Lucia Joyce. Lucia had been a promising dancer who went insane and was confined to an institution. This brings to mind Zelda Fitzgerald. After Zelda gave up dancing she went insane in part, because she lacked purpose. Lucia is reported to be Joyce’s Muse for the book Finnegans Wake. Finnegans Wake has a sort of made up language. Using words that other people can not understand is said to be a sign of Schizophrenia. When Hal sees the Deans of the College, he has a lot of things he wishes to tell them, but he is unable to make them understand him. Hal may of had a break from reality or did his Uncle merely set him up for failure at the interview? Later on in the book we see some scenes from Hal’s life which happen prior to the first chapter. The song “I Want To Tell You” by the Beatles is mentioned. Hal communicates by phone with his older brother Orin and with his younger brother Mario. But, it seems as if other people can’t understand Hal. His father is unable to communicate with him, and maybe after his breakdown no one can communicate any longer with Hal. Perhaps Hal has retreated to the inner workings of his mind?
Orin does not tell Hal that he mailed a copy of the Failed Entertainment Cartridge to the Medical Attaché. The Medical Attaché condition starts the whole plot of the novel. A group of Canadian Separatists (Les Assassins en Fauteuils Roulants (A.F.R.), known in English as the Wheelchair Assassins) learns that the Cartridge causes anyone who views it to go into an irreversible coma, and then die from lack of eating and drinking. The French Canadian Separatists wish to obtain the Master Cartridge , because copies of the master cartridge do not have the same power. There may be another Master Copy buried in James Incandenza’s Grave. In the hospital, Gately dreams that he is digging up Hal’s fathers head to try get a copy of what could be the antidote for the coma caused by viewing the Failed Entertainment Cartridge. The heroes need to find the antidote to bring the people who have viewed the Cartridge back to life. But, all of this is based on my reading other people theories of how Hamlet is supposed to be like Infinite Jest. I do not see what other people see when I read the end of Infinite Jest. It is reported that James Incandenza’s Ghost comes speaks to Gately to tell him to die up his body to find something that they need. It could be the Master Copy or it could be the antidote. I did recall that Orin has been captured by the Canadian Separatists and they are in the process of torturing him with insects because that is his greatest fear. They want to know where “The Master is buried.” I assume this means the Master Cartridge that was sent to the Medical Attaché. Orin is in real trouble, as he does not have the Master Cartridge any longer. It is unclear what happened to the Master Cartridge after the Medical Attaché, his wife and a number of other people who came looking for the Medical Attaché viewed the Failed Entertainment and all went into comas. This is in no way similar the plot of Ulysses. The head digging scene does not happen in the novel, as it is only a dream that Gately has while in the hospital. Gately is in a world in between life and death in which he may be more able to communicate with Hal’s dead father. In the book Gately is digging up something “important” with a sad kid, whom most people assume is Hal. I am not sure the words sad kid are synonymous with Hal, but it does not make sense for the sad kid to be anyone else. I assume the Wheelchair Assassins believe they can use the Failed Entertainment Master Cartridge to hold the North American Alliance hostage and demand Quebec be allowed to succeed from the Union. All of the Northern Hemisphere has become a single country in Infinite Jest, but some sources report that Mexico is part of the Alliance, but Central and South America are excluded. The book’s action takes place in between the years 2004 and 2012, expect for the one flashback scene to James Incandenza’s past. Infinite Jest was published in 1996. People have analysed the book and come up with the time line dates. But, the book itself does not give any real dates for the actions, because commercial sponsors have bought the rights to each year. Instead of a date in time, each year has a name which corresponds to product such as the Year of the Trail Sized Dove Bar. It is not clear if Wallace means Dove the Soap or Dove the Ice Cream bar. Wallace used the names of real products for the years, but non of the companies mentioned were upset enough to try to sue him over these names, as it would bad publicity for the company, and show them to be petty. By not using real dates, the book is open to the reader’s personal interpretations. Now that these future years have passed fans like to analyze, how much of the future predicted in infinite Jest became a reality.
Ulysses is a story told in an unconventional way, at the time. However, many other writers have copies Joyce’s ideas. whole literary style called Post Modernism has been developed. James Joyce’s style is no longer a novel style, but is not widely accepted and copied. Still some critics believe Finnegans Wake to be a joke or a hoax played upon the reader by James Joyce, due to the inaccessibility of the writing.
The book Ulysses begins with conversation with a character named Buck Mulligan telling the main character Stephen Dedalus that he should have prayed when his mother asked him to do so on her death-bed. This really happened to James Joyce. Dedalus wishes to wipe out the bad memories of his mother, by removing himself from Buck Mulligan’s company.
Leopold Bloom is a character in Ulysses based on Joyce’s friend, who also wrote a book called The Confessions of Zeno, Aron Ettore Schmitz Italo Svevo. The Confessions of Zeno would have likely been lost to history if not that James Joyce supported the book. I would also like to read The Confessions of Zeno, if I ever have time. The link in between James Joyce’s friend and Infinite Jest is that Italo Svevo is described in Wikipedia as being a conversationalist. ( See page 27 of Infinite Jest known as “Dad Professional Conversationalist.”)
When I started to read Infinite Jest, I did not want to commit to the book, so I got it first from the library for free. I started to read it at the beginning. The first scene failed to capture my attention. So, I flipped through the novel and found the most interesting part of the whole book. The story of Poor Tony and the ants in the dumpster. I started to read at that point. I was really into it. I read it more several times. I searched the book for the word “Tony” using the Kindle Edition. I picked and choose what parts I wanted to read. Eventually, I got around to the beginning part of the story, which is interesting, but not if you don’t know the history of the character Hal. The first scene takes places at the latest time in the novel. One simply needs to find the chart of the timeline and place all the pieces of the novel together in order. Hal is committed to an insane asylum, but he is convinced he will be let out in order to play in a tennis match the next day. His father is dead having killed himself by placing his head in a microwave. His Uncle is the one who takes him to the meeting with the Deans of the College. According to what could be the Uncle’s plan, Hal is imprisoned. This is the end of the novel, but it comes in the beginning of the novel.
When Poor Tony is first introduced in Infinite Jest, it is in a chapter written in first person by an unnamed narrator. This is a short stand alone chapter in the book. The narrator is never revealed and never appears again. This is similar to Part 12 of Ulysses.
A little bit of extra information about the unnamed narrator character is required. Unnamed (yrstruly), Tony, and another man, called C want to get high. They get high by boosting things, which means stealing them. Once they have boosted some items they decided to go to Chinatown to trade them with Mr. Woo. I thought this could be a reference to the song by Steely Dan Dr. Wu, but I am not sure. Dr. Woo is a man who has opium that they want, but yrstruly is worried by sarcastic Mr. Woo’s attitude. One very funny line is on page 132 to 133. Mr. Woo says something like the boosting business must be turning an excellent profit. Mr. Woo does want to kill them, because he gives them shots that have poison instead of opium. Yrstruly does not want to try the shot first, and neither does Tony, so they get C to try the shot. Tony is so upset, he swears he will quit crime and drugs, and yrstruly has to go through withdrawal lying in the hallway of his mother’s apartment, because she won’t let him in the house. It is not stated as to why, but clearly his mother is angry with him due to his drugs and crimes. When I explain the situation, it is does not sound nearly as poetic as how David Foster Wallace told it, but it was a compelling chapter, and I read it several times.
Tony later steals a pursue from a woman, which contains an artificial heart. This is what causes Tony to end up living in a dumpster, as the woman dies after her heart is stolen. Tony is hiding out wanted for murder by the cops, and going through withdrawal. He has a seizure, and goes to the hospital. When he wakes he checks himself out and he decides to steal more purses to get high. He steals Kate Gompert’s pursue and another women’s pursue who lives in the halfway house. Kate is too weak to give chase, but the other woman does pursue him, and almost catches him. Unfortunately the place he is planning to go to score is a magic shop, that has been taken over by the villains. We assume that Tony meets his demise at the Magic Shop. Tony is always referred to as Poor Tony, but I read online his original name was Queer Tony, but David Foster Wallace changed it to Poor because using the word Queer was insensitive, and especially considering that Tony is an unsavory character, a name change was in order. You can find this online also if you look for it. If only the woman had stopped Poor Tony from proceeding to the magic shop, he may have been spared.
Part 15 of Ulysses contains hallucinations. The end of Infinite Jest finds Gately in a hospital bed after being shot, having hallucinations. Poor Tony also has hallucinations on the subway. It is not clear if the characters in Ulysses are drinking Absinthe, which would cause them to have hallucinations. Modern Absinthe is not made the same way that it was, as that would be illegal now.
There is a scripted play inside of Ulysses. There are plot outlines of the movies created by Hal’s father who is an independent film maker. The last movie he makes is the called the Failed Entertainment. However, a fictional filmography for Hal’s father James Incandenza is created. There is a lot of information on one of the movies about a Nun inside Infinite Jest. The Movie was called Blood Sister, One Tough Nun.
I looked up Molly Bloom and find she is based on Nora Barnacle, James Joyce’s wife. Molly Bloom may be more similar to Avril Incandenza then to Molly Notkin. James Incandenza is unhappy because his wife is unfaithful, and because he can’t communicate with his son. James Incandenza’s father was an actor who played the man from Glad. In a flashback scene to James Incandenza’s childhood, Hal’s grandfather comes home from work in his Man from Glad outfit. The Man from Glad is an advertising character who solves your trash bag needs. Ironically, everyone in the Incandenza is extremely unhappy. When the grandfather passes out drunk face down in dust from under the bed, that Hal’s grandmother had failed to vacuum under, James Incandenza about mathematics to distract himself.
Parts of Ulysses are written in stream of consciousness. I can’t think of any part of Infinite Jest that is written in stream of consciousness of one of the characters such as in Ulysses. There may be some stream of consciousness in Infinite Jest, but it does not jump out at me, the way does in Ulysses. In reading Ulysses one become aware that Joyce goes into stream of consciousness inside one of the characters minds without any warning. In conclusion, I will say, that the two books are not very similar at all to each other. Just because one likes one of the books does not mean one will like the other book. They are very different.
As a follow-up to my Jem Girls as Roses, I am presenting Sailormoon Girls as Roses.
Sailor Moon is the Rose Moonstone (Moonstone is white with pink edges)
Venus can be many things. I am thinking Henry Fonda which is very yellow, but also an orange rose could work, as orange is her signature color. Each Sailor Girls has her own signature color. Oranges and Lemons is a rose with both orange and yellow together.
Sailor Mars is Firefighter (Red Naturally with fire in the name) Red is her signature color
Sailor Mercury is the most popular of all the Sailors in Japan. They are called Sailor Scouts in the American version, but Sailor Soldiers in the Japanese version. She has blue hair and her signature color is blue, so that is a problem to find a blue rose. So, Blue Girl is her rose, which is not really blue, but what I can do?
Sailor Jupiter has brown hair and her signature color is green. This is also an issue. There is a brown called Hot Cocoa, so that will be her rose.
I have some Sailor Moon Dolls, that I would like to sell online at this point, but I am too busy to list them. I want to list them only because I don’t play with them anymore, and they need to go to good homes.
I saved a short clip of Tony DiMera played by Thaao Penghlis from the NBC Drama Days of Our Lives from 2004. Tony was on stranded on a tropical island with the other characters, and he was betraying them at the time, but they did not know if they could trust him or not so they gave him the benefit of the doubt. In this scene Tony reveals that he can’t be trusted as he smashes a signaling device that they are using to help rescue them. I just recently found the clip in my files, and wanted to share it with other fans.
I believe the brevity (2 minutes and 30 seconds) of this clip constitutes fair use. I took five segments from the single day program. I believe the clip aired on, Friday, September 3 2004. I uploaded it to You Tube, in 2004, but it was deleted for some reason, by You Tube. I found the old files again on saved to a DVD and I had to reedit the whole thing to create a short story with a beginning middle and end. One can watch this clip, and understand it even without knowing anything about the Show Days of Our Lives.
Summary of the action in the clip:
Tony comes into the room wearing a black hood and gloves, and the audience does not know who he is, but then he pulls back his hood to show himself, then he smashes the device. Tony looks a photo of John and Marlena, and comments on it before he leaves. When Doug arrives after Tony is gone, Doug notices the smashed device and says, “Who would do this?” End scene.
Commentary on the clip:
I found the concept of the device to be interesting, as it reminds me of one of those fake box thing with wires, which you can find online as a black box that does nothing. Tony’s cane has a lion’s head on the top. At first we see Tony using the cane to cut the wire. This is not necessary, since Tony will later smash the device, but that is used to build dramatic tension. We don’t know what is going on, and will cutting the wire be enough to disable the device? It is incongruous to think that Tony would bother to disguise himself and then remove his disguise to show himself before completing his act of sabotage. But, this is what is known as a great villain aside. Even Shakespeare used this technique. The villain tells the audience what he doing or narrates his own actions. Kevin Spacey used this technique in the show House of Cards. In fact, this is what ultimately undid Andre who is an identical character to Tony and caused his death. Andre thought no one could hear him when he confessed to Tony’s funeral urn, what he had done. He addressed the urn as if Tony were present. Abigail over hears him and ends up killing him with the lid of the urn.
The clip spans the entire episode, and is never shown as a compact scene. I wish Days would not break up so many scenes in this way. There is constant cutting of scenes and mixing them in with other scenes, so one can’t watch and enjoy complete scenes. Even this 2 minute scene was broken into five parts with many commercial breaks and cuts to other characters having scenes. I am also stating the I have changed the work, and I am not giving away the heart of the episode, as it aired that days and many events occurred in that episode.
Woody Allen vs Mia Farrow parallels the book Infinite Jest by David Foster Wallace
warning contains Spoilers for the book, Infinite Jest and the movie Wonder Wheel
Moses Farrow posted a blog on Blogger about his point of view. I am a supporter of Woody Allen. I never believed that he molested his daughter, Dylan. It is very hard to wrap ones head around how Mia Farrow did this to her daughter. I think she created false memories in her daughter’s mind. But, maybe Mia Farrow does believe the molestation happened? I don’t think it happened, because as the blog explains, and as Woody Allen has said many times, he was not allowed to be in the house and did not go to visit. If he had he would not have been allowed to be alone with Dylan. The house was filled with people. Mia had many adopted children and biological children, and all of them had been told Woody Allen was bad person. I can’t defend him about the Soon-Yi incident, but she was 21 at the time. Certainly he should have broken it off with Mia, because having a relationship with Soon-Yi. But, the incident mushroomed a Shakespearean style tragedy.
I was reminded about the David Foster Wallace Book Infinite Jest in which,
Spoilers for Infinite Jest follow
the young female romantic character, Joelle, is disfigured when her mother throws acid in her face by accident. This is how it happened. The family was having dinner and the mother felt the father was spending too much time with his daughter Joelle and giving her too much attention. Maybe the mother was jealous? The father confesses that he is sexually attracted to his daughter, but he would never touch her and he tried to fight the feelings, by treating her as if she was younger than her real age. By treating the daughter like a little girl he hoped he could drive the feelings away. But, when the mother hears the confession, she flies into a blind rage, because he own father had molested her. In this rage she picks up a vile of acid and throws aiming to hit the father, but instead hits her daughter in the face causing the acid to burn her face. The character Joelle always wears a veil for this reason.
There is some speculation that Joelle has not really been hit with the acid, because the woman who relays the story is an unreliable narrator named Molly Notkin. I believe the name Molly is a nod to the book Ulysses by James Joyce in which there is a character named Molly Bloom. In an interview, David Foster Wallace spoke of reading the book Ulysses with his mother chapter by chapter as a child. David Foster Wallace’s mother, Sally, wrote a book on grammar called Practically Painless English.
The parallel with the Woody Allen Mia Farrow conflict was that the mother hurt and destroyed her own daughters just to get back at her husband. I also noticed this conflict in Woody Allen’s movie Wonder Wheel.
Spoilers for the movie Wonder Wheel.
In the movie, the older woman is jealous of her husband’s wayward daughter. The older woman has an ongoing affair with a younger man. Then she discovers that the younger man is interested in her husband’s daughter. She feels so upset, that she tips off the mob to the location of the daughter, and the daughter just disappears. The phone call she makes is done off camera, but the audience wonders if she made the phone call. At any rate, the daughter does disappear, but it not clear if she just left on her own due to the conflict in the family, but it can be assumed the she is killed by the mob.
If you have any comments please leave them below. I can’t say, I know anything for sure, as I have no contact with any of the people involved. But, this blog is not posted to debate Woody Allen’s guilt or innocence. The reason for this blog is to point out the parallel situation in the book Infinite Jest. One more reason to consider why the molestation did not happen is that since Mia Farrow had already decided in her mind that Woody Allen was child molester, there would be no way she would then allow Woody Allen to be alone with Dylan. And if it did happen the way she said, she would bear some responsibility for allowing that situation to occur. Dylan was Woody Allen’s not biological daughter and he never had visitation rights. What kind of mother would allow her daughter to be alone with a known child molester?
After such a terrible Jem Movie the Jem Franchise is in disarray, but we still love the show in our hearts. Here are a couple of thoughts about Jem and the Misfits.
I have not read the Jem Bible, but I felt that everything in the original cartoon counted as cannon to the series and not just what Christy Marx created. Christy Marx’s episodes were the best episodes, but I accepted everything.
I felt the Stingers were not a good idea. They looked too much like the Master Race. They reduced the screen time of the Misfits. I have always understood the parents did not like the Misfits, and that is why we got the Stingers. How would the parents feel about the Master Race Concept? Is this a better role model for the children? Did parents really go up in arms about the Misfits or was this an excuse they came up with to create the Stingers due to lacking sales? My take was the price of the dolls was more of an issue then the characters of the Misfits. I can envision a lot of not very nice or fun games with the Stingers being added to the mix. I won’t say it here, but you get my point.
The Stingers fourth season episodes were not as compelling or even interesting as the prior three seasons. I liked the idea of Pizzazz changing from wanted to steal Rio from Jem to wanting to be with Riot, but they never did very much with the idea, as the Misfits were basically out for most of the fourth season. They brought the Misfits back for a final Farwell, and I was really upset about the show ending. I was not happy at all, and I saw the Stingers as the coffin nails to the Jem program. I did not care about role models. I was the same age as Jem would have been at the time of the series. I never had children.
Were the dolls even needed at all? They could have just focused on creating a successful cartoon show without any dolls. Why should the fate of show be based on doll sales? The dolls were there, but I resisted buying them until the show was cancelled.
I have been thinking about why the Stingers we introduced in the first place. I would love to be a fly on the wall to hear how a group people all thought having the Stingers would boost sagging doll sales. The point is the series its had good ratings, but the doll sales were what caused the cancellation. I am reminded of who thought cancelling Star Trek after three season would be a good idea. If they had more seasons, the money made from just reruns alone would be millions and million more. Why would anyone want to buy another boy doll Riot and two boring blondes female dolls? Boy dolls always sell less well. There were too many characters with dolls already in the Hasbro line, parents would never want to buy all of them. Adult collectors are the only group, that will spend over a thousand dolls on new dolls and fashions. If one bought each doll at full price of around 20 dollars, and each fashion which were sold from the lowest being about 15 dollars to a high of 17.99, we are talking adult doll collectors only. In 1985 $20 dollars was worth more, than it is today. Why give something this expensive to children to destroy? Children normally do things to dolls such as cut off the hair and stick pins in them. The dolls are not saved in collections, but recycled like so much plastic junk after the children grow too old to be interesting in them. As a child I took my Malibu Barbie into the swimming pool causing the pool chemicals to destroy her. No one told me, this doll can’t go into the pool or to the beach. She looked like she could handle the water. She came in with a bathing suit, sunglasses and a towel. I thought she was great for going swimming, in 1974 when I was 9.
Now, that the line of Integrity Jem Dolls is finished we can consider them in their entirety. Integrity did a great job, and went above and beyond to fix all the issues that were wrong with the Hasbro line of Jem dolls. The Hasbro Dolls were based on a line of Dolls called Darci, that was not that great looking to begin with. They should have created a more unique doll. Darci is too fat, and her head was too big. But, one can get used to the heavier look, but Jem also appears flat chested compared to Barbie. The Hasbro Jems have a round moon face. It takes some getting used to in order to accept the way in which Jem looked so different from Barbie. Dolls are different from people. I noticed that it takes time to accept the way a new line of dolls look, so they don’t look strange anymore.
No one liked Hasbro Jem’s two toned pink and blonde hair. Hasbro stole this idea from a doll called Tuesday Taylor. Tuesday was a Barbie sized doll and Tiffany Taylor was a larger than Barbie sized doll with two toned hair, that one was supposed to pull to the front to create both brown and blonde hair. It is almost impossible to arrange the hair properly to get the desired effect. Hasbro needed to create a separate doll for the Jerrica Character with blonde hair, and the Jem Dolls needed all pink hair to be correct. Therefore, all of the Hasbro Jem dolls do not look like Jem at all. They have both pink and blonde hair at the same time. Integrity Dolls made Jem’s Hair the correct shade of all pink.
I was able to get almost all the Hasbro Jem dolls new and on sale, because I waited until they were on clearance for $7.99 each at Toys R Us. Then I tried to collect what I could find and the outfits as well, but some were sold out. I could not find Aja new, but I was able get her used. I really liked the Shana Doll best of all. I kept her in the box for a long time, but when I took her out her legs had been damaged by the plastic pants she had been wearing. The damage is slight, but her legs had become ripped like cellulite. I found the Kimber Doll in an obscure store up in the mountains, after searching for a long time. She was not reduced in price, but I was so happy to find her. I will never forgot how happy I was. I liked the Roses Kimber outfit. There was a certain amount of excitement with each Jem doll I found. All that feeling is gone now.
I never bought a Rio Doll. I don’t think I would bought the Stingers Dolls. They did not look that good. Minx and Rapture were the same girl with different hair and make up. I never bought the Synergy Doll, because I did not like her look or her character.
The Jem Star earrings were not the correct on the Hasbro Dolls, and often the look of the dolls did not match up with the cartoon. This was in part because they were developing the show, and the dolls at the same time. They could not correctly connect to have the dolls and the show match. I have most of the Hasbro line of Jem dolls. I never played with them as if they were the characters from the show. I only dressed them, as if they were Barbie or any other fashion doll.
Hasbro Pizzazz looked horrible and scary. The character Pizzazz was a spoiled brat, and she was in the end pathetic when she was in love with Riot. But scary was not her character. They could have made a Love Sick Pizzazz doll. I would have liked to have seen a Star Spangled Fantasy set of Misfits. I would have liked a Roxie doll for the episode Roxy Rumbles. However, Integrity gave the fans so much more than we could ever hope for. I can’t complain at all.
I did not buy any of the Integrity Dolls due to the price, and because I have too many dolls and need reduce my doll collection. I might have collected all the Integrity Dolls if I had more money, and if I did not have a full set of almost all the Hasbro Jems, and too many other dolls. If I got one, I would have wanted to have one of each. It was easier not to buy any, then to buy just one or two. I fear I may be a completist. In the show the toys that made us, the concept of the feeling of the need to complete a collection, to buy one of each is discussed. It’s a little like OCD. However, I never completed my Hasbro Jem dolls, as I did not like some of them. The Integrity line of Dolls has me thinking “Too Many Jems”. It is not so bad, now they are over, but at the time, it would have been very expensive to buy them all as they were released. If they had done them at a more reasonable pace of say, two a year for 1O years. But, dolls come and go as fads. After the movie was over there was less hype about Jem, and so they only wanted to do a short term release. I believe they lasted about 3 years. Some people started to buy each one, but then gave up after a certain point. Maybe they lost interest? I read every blog I could find on the Integrity Line of Jem dolls. Some people wanted to review each doll, but gave up somewhere in year two. The final wave of dolls is less reviewed.
Integrity Stormers hair looked too flat. The Hasbro Stormers hair was too curly. Stormers hair has a wave, and is not super curly, but the flat look of her hair, made me not want the doll. All the Integrity Stormers had the same flat hair. They could have made some of them with more curly hair. The makeup on Integrity Stormers is a not as neon bright as on the Hasbro Jems. This can be pro or a con depending on what one is expecting in the makeup. Shana has great looking curly hair, and she is one of most correct looking of the dolls. Integrity Danse has colored hair, but about 50 percent of her hair is blonde. Hasbro Danse is a hard doll to dress, because any color one put on her could clash with one of the other colors in her hair. The Jetta Doll looks very good and quite actuate. The Hasbro Glitter and Gold Jem was a terrible looking. Her blush was too red, and her mouth had too many teeth. They wanted to make her look more like the smiling Barbie, and it was creepy. I like the closed month Jem better. The Integrity Jems started with a closed mouth, but the changed to showing some teeth. The Integrity Misfits and Holograms in the first wave have earrings that are not correct to the characters. The earrings look like they are are made of metal, but I hope they are plastic to avoid damage. They look like earrings for humans, that someone bought and stuck on the sides of the dolls head. Why would Integrity be so correct in all details only to fail with the earrings? The character Pizzazz had triangle style hoop earrings on the cartoon show. If they are removable, one can remove them, however it may be hard to find correct hoop earrings in the shape of triangles.
Updated: The earrings are not original to the doll. Some random person merely collected all the dolls and pierced the ears with ugly earrings and then placed them all on Ebay, so it looks like ugly earrings was a option on some of the dolls. She sold her dolls at a reduced price of $99 dollars and people did not seem to notice the earrings. She sold all her dolls. Now this is just cautionary tale, about buying aftermarket dolls. Note: I am on the waiting list to go an Integrity Convention. I was so impressed by the Jem Doll once I received her, that I wanted to learn more about Integrity Dolls.
The Integrity bodies are too thin. The entire line of Integrity Jems looks too thin to even be alive, but I am not sure how they could have fixed this issue. After I got my first Integrity Doll, I realized the thin legs make the dolls very easy to dress. Lycra pants and tights just slip off and on very easily due to the thinness of the legs.
The IDC Jem Comic book made some of the characters fat, I mean really fat. Fat does happen to people, but this is a comic book. The idea is to escape the real world. It is easy to make the characters look not fat. It is much harder to lose weight in real life. I would like to see a character, that was maybe slightly over weight, but very upset about it, rather than characters who are actually obese. It is not common for girls in their 20s to be obese. Rock Stars all do cocaine and speed to stay thin, so they could have used that in a storyline. I did not read the comics, and maybe used it as a storyline. I don’t know. It would make more sense if they had the characters aged to middle age and then some of them would be naturally fat. I would have read the comics if I thought they were sold at a reasonable price. But, they are not on the Kindle system. I did not want to have physical comic books adding to my already too many book and things. I did not want to start with a new digital line of comic books that I would need a new user name password and most likely a new app. I did not like the way they had drawn Pizzazz. It was not just the half shaved head and the piercings, but she seemed to be wearing a white diaper. Pizzazz was not a hard-core punk rocker. She was New Wave just like Jem herself. If I had bought the first comic book I would have had to buy them all. I am obsessive compulsive to finish any collection. IDC could do a comic book series about the characters 20 years later. I think that would be interesting. My idea was that Jem has married Rio, but then Riot is still trying to win her over. The best dolls in the Integrity line were Star Stuck Guitar Jem, and Bad Kimber with the orange haired head. Hollywood Jem looked pretty good, and so did the Roxie Dolls.
Updated: I bought the prototype head Integrity for the 88 Pizzazz doll, then I bought a body to mount her on. The skin tone is grey, which made it hard to find a body in the correct skin tone. The body I got was a little less grey then the head tone. But, it is not really noticeable. One only notices the grey skin if they mount the grey head on a body that is pink toned or peach toned. Compared to Hasbro Jem, is much better. The first thing you will notice is Integrity Jem is very easy to dress. Hasbro Jem is hard to dress because the limbs are made of soft vinyl with metal joints inside them. The metal inside creates spots similar to the issues found on Topper Dawn Dolls. The vinyl limbs makes Hasbro Jem very hard to dress especially in lycra pants or tights. The Hasbro Jem outfit line was filled with many tights and jumpsuits. I have no idea how they expected children to be able to dress Hasbro Jem. This is a doll that will have kids asking Mom to dress the doll for them. The pushing and pulling process of dressing a Hasbro Jem is not only difficult and time consuming but can cause damage to the outfit. Rips will occur and clothes will be stretched out of shape. I have Hasbro Shana which I did not remove the outfits until 2010, because it was difficult to redress the doll. The plastic in the outfit began to decay and created pock marks all over the doll. The Shana Doll was ruined. Plastic and metal cause staining and decay in plastic dolls. If glue is used it creates hip melt, as seen in Tuesday Taylor and in other Kenner dolls such as Action Dusty. Hasbro bought Kenner. The Integrity outfits and shoes avoid plastic so they are safe to leave on the dolls for display. Integrity Jem Dolls are so much better than Hasbro Dolls.
I came up with an idea of pairing each Jem character or Doll with a Rose that represents her.
Hologram Dolls and Roses
Doll Jem / Rose First Love (or any baby pink colored rose would work)
Doll Jerrica / Rose Love and Peace (pink on the outside with yellow on the inside reminiscent of the two toned color changing hair on the Hasbro Jem Dolls)
Doll Kimber / Rose Double Delight (red and white, but the red is more like the hair color of Kimber then a standard red rose)
Doll Bad or Evil Kimber (as seen in the episode entitled Scandal ) / Rose Vavoom (neon orange rose)
Doll Aja / Rose Blue Girl (Blue Girl is not really blue, its lavender, but for lack of a better choice)
Doll Shana / Rose Sterling Silver (The Hasbro Doll had a more lavender hair color then Shana’s cartoon color hair which was more purple)
Doll Raya / Rose Aromatherapy (Dark Pink)
Doll Video / Rose Henry Fonda (Yellow Rose)
Misfits Dolls and Roses
Doll Pizzazz / Rose St. Patrick’s Day (There is no green rose, but St. Patrick’s Day has some green in the early stages. JFK is white with some green in the early stages.)
Doll Roxy / Rose (a white rose, but with an orange streak in it) I can’t find one. Oranges and Yellows is nice, but it’s yellow and white, instead of orange and white.
Doll Stormer / Rose Mr. Lincoln (there is no blue Rose, but she wears a red rose in her hair)
Doll Jetta / Rose Black Baccara (the rose is not really black, its more red. A black rose with a white stripe would be great.)
Doll Clash / Rose ? (Clash started out with two-tone hair, that was pink and aqua green/blue. Her hair was changed to purple in later episodes. This unknown purple rose fits Clash’s later hair color.)
Many of these roses could be dyed or altered in Photoshop to match the characters or dolls.
Thoughts on the unnatural hair colors of the Jem and Misfits characters
I was doing volunteer at a school, for my degree, with second grade girls during the Jem series original run in the 80s. The girls liked Jem more than Barbie, but they said, their parents thought it was too expensive. One little girl, I remember was crushed when her parents bought her Barbie and the Rockers instead of Jem on her birthday. The girls asked me how the Jem Girls got such unnatural hair colors. I told them the hair would have to be dyed. No one can grow naturally pink, green or blue hair. This concept was hard for them to understand.
Small bonus piece of fiction
What Piazza is thinking about:
I am so upset. I was awaken in the middle of night when the fire alarm went off. I was having a wonderful dream about seducing a sexy movie star at the after party for the premier of the opening of his latest movie. I threw on my green velvet robe, and had to meet with the staff on the front lawn. It was a full half an hour before I could get back in the house, and by then I could not get back to sleep, for the rest of the night.
Own Roots Roses are very difficult to grow. Most of what you will read online about how to grow own roses will not help you at all. The basic principles of rose growing apply to own roots roses, but there are a few more things that you need to know. The first thing being do not plant “the bands” which are the bareroots into the ground at once unless you have a perfect climate and perfect conditions. If you live somewhere like Santa Monica, California you may be ok with planting them in the ground. The reason to plant them in pots is so you can move them away from hot sun which is a killer of bareroots roses. Do not let them dry out in the hot sun, but over watering can kill them. The water makes the roots rot. In an effect to protect from hot sun you can end up killing them. I would suggest moving the pots into a greenhouse or even into the house to protect from the combination of hot sun plus over watering.
Once the rose is more than one year old, and or looking strong and healthy, then you can consider planting the rose into the ground. You will need an ideal location for the own roots rose. Own roots roses like morning sun and afternoon shade. Unlike own roots roses, grafted roses can take hot sun if you give them enough water.
You need to dig a planting hole much larger then the roots of the rose. Dig as large a hole as you can without hurting your back. Dig a tree planting size hole and fill that with healthy soil, and you can also mix in some of your native soil in with the store bought soil, but not too much. Adding some native soil will help the plant. But, if your native soil is poor, do you add too much. In some parts of the country native soil is very healthy. If you native soil is loam, you can mix in as much as 50 percent native soil. If your soil is poor mix in only 30 to 20 percent native soil. If you use too much poor native soil you may notice ,when you water, that the water is only staying on the top of the ground and not getting to the roots. Test the soil by digging a small way down and see how damp the soil is after watering. If the soil is still dry two inches down, you have a problem and you will need to dig up the plant, mix in more healthy soil and start again. The plants dislike being dug up, so you should avoid this by starting with health soil. You can also use homemade compost in the planting hole to amend the soil, but don’t put compost into pots as it is too rich for potting plants.
Even if the roots of your rose never grow beyond the planting hole, a larger hole will help to create good drainage. Your potting mix should be high quality. When you dig the hole to plant your own roots rose into the ground, you will need to amend the soil to a high level. If your soil is mostly hard clay you need to replace most of it with bagged soil such as a rose mix or other brands of high quality soils with good ingredients. Good ingredients consist of forest type woods and peat moss, and maybe a few quality ingredients such a perlite or a wetting agent. You can also make your own healthy soil by mixing healthy ingredients yourself, but it won’t save you any money unless you are buying the ingredients in bulk like for a full-scale farm. Own roots roses have more delicate and sensitive roots then grafted roots roses. Remember that grafted roots roses which are most of the roses that one can normally find at any garden center or big box store have very tough roots because they are grafted into the roots stocks of very hardy roses such as Fortuniana, Manetti, Dr. Huey or Multiflora. Multiflora is often used on Knock Out or other easy care roses and is more likely to get Rosette virus. Rosette virus can be spread by mites which bite an infected rose and then travel to a health rose and infect it. Own Roots Roses are free from viruses when you buy them, but can still pick up a virus from mites or by pruning and cutting tools that cut an infected rose and then cut a health rose. You should use bleach to disinfect your tools, and do not plant your roses nearby locations of wild patches of Rose Multiflora.
Don’t be fooled by terms like mycorrhizal fungi in bagged soil mixes. Mycorrhizal fungi is not good for a potting mix. Mycorrhizal fungi can be created in a healthy soil long-term, but there is no magic bullet for your soil. Just buy the best quality potting soil you can afford without too many ingredients. Some soils throw in everything, but the kitchen sink. I made those same mistakes when I was first starting to garden. My soil was native and I thought the more ingredients I used the better. If I read any kind of advice online about soil, I would add it. Banana peels, eggshells, lime, Epsom salt, or whatever. I would buy add it, and my soil became like a messy closet without organization or goals. When you amend soil you need to know what your soil needs before you start. Simple is better. You can always add more of something but you can’t remove things you added. Add a small amount first and see how the plants do.
Some bagged soil have so many ingredients that they become too rich for the young plant roots, for example bat guano, rock dust (rock phosphate), and kelp will be burn the roots of own roots roses. Non Organic Potting mixing sometimes have too many chemical fertilizers which can burn the delicate roots. Chemical Lawn fertilizer is very harsh and it can burn your lawn and the roses that grow near it. Even Organic natural fertilizers can burn plants if you add too much of them. Organic Planting Mixes can have too many natural fertilizers like blood meal or bone meal. Blood meal is an animals product, and so is bone meal. Blood meal can have too much nitrogen that creates burning. Bone Meal can raise the PH of the soil too much. I once added bone meal to help flowering, and all the flowers on my asian magnolia turned brown that year. I also never buy soils that have chicken or steer manure because these mixes are too high in sodium and they are very cheap to produce. Cheap potting soil is like junk food for your plants. It usually has a lot of manure and straw. Using cheap ingredients may work for planting crops in a field on a farm, but it’s not good for small gardens that grow ornamental plants. They may survive a junk food diet, but they won’t be very healthy. Don’t buy mixes with added lime. Most soils are too alkaline and need more acid. This is at least true in California. Neutral soil is ph 7, but 6.5 is the best range for roses. There are very few soils that need added lime. Those soils are mostly located in pine forests. You can test your soil, but sometime those tests don’t really work. You can spend a lot of money to have your soil tested by a lab, but is it worth the money and effort? Different parts of your yard may have different soil ph and so you need to test many parts of your yard soil. Since chemical fertilizers like Miracle Grow are composed of salts they will raise your PH. Most people use them every year. If you don’t have a lot of rain in the winter to flush out the salt, those salts can build up. This is why drought can hurt your garden in more ways then just lack of water. Always read the labels on products you buy for your garden and think about what you are applying.
You will have to baby your own roots roses along, and if you are working full-time, you will not have enough time to attend to their needs. Own roots roses are good for expert gardeners or retired people. If you have a harsh climate you may have to keep them in pots forever, but they look great as patio plants in pots. A harsh climate is almost everywhere in the USA. If it snows in the winter you have a harsh climate. If summers are hotter than 100 degrees that is also a harsh climate. If there are strong winds you should protect them with wind breaks.
Don’t Believe the Hype
You may see the following online about own roots roses: “The first year they sleep; the second year they creep; the third year they leap!” But, this is not true. If you can get own roots roses to survive past the first year, they may grow slowly or quickly. It depends on which variety of own roots rose you buy. If you buy Mr. Lincoln, a very hardy rose, he will do better than Sterling Silver a very weak rose. I tried Sterling Silver as an Own Roots rose, but it died in the summer heat. I should have brought it inside the house, but air conditioning is not good for roses either. It is hard to know what to do. Heat kills quickly. Cold and salt are rose foes. If you have snow you can cover your roses with straw or with buckets and straw. Jerry Baker has many good ideas for roses and winter protection. I don’t have snow in my zone 9, so I don’t really know what to do with snow. In some places the roads are salted in the winter. This salt can come into your soil and kill your roses. If you think they will salt in front of your house, grow your roses only in back. Roses can do well in containers which you can move away from any peril. Mr. Lincoln is an awesome rose with huge red flowers. I bought him at Kmart because he was cheap and he had a huge flower. Rose File Com is a large rose website that is non commercial. The grower Steve, started by growing his roses in Texas and then he moved to New Jersey. He took notes on how his roses did in both climates. About Mr. Lincoln he wrote
Mr. Lincoln – died for no evident reason
I have to wonder if Mr. Lincoln is often infected with virus because he is sold everywhere and very cheaply. Mr. Lincoln is a great red rose if you can find him virus free. If I was growing just one more Own Roots Rose, I would try Mr. Lincoln as Own Roots Roses do not come with viruses. The virus come from the root stocks which are infected, and need to all be destroyed and grown again virius free to protect the future of roses.
UC Davis did some research on keeping virus infected roses at 100 degrees day and night. The study showed some promise in killing the virus. The reason I kill any rose in my garden that I think has a virus is I worry about infecting my non infected roses. At this time, I do not seen any signs of virus on my current roses. Roses with mosaic virus will still grow fine and there is no reason to kill them unless you are worried about infecting your other roses. I stopped buying roses at places that have shown me to have mosaic virus in the past. But the choice is up to you. However, Rosette virus is fatal and you have to destroy any roses infected with Rosette. I would have bought a new Mr. Lincoln, but I found another rose called Let Freedom Ring which looks just like Mr. Lincoln, but the flowers are a little smaller. I don’t wish to grow both Let Freedom Ring and Mr. Lincoln as they look very similar.
Another Hype about Own Roots Roses is that they live longer then grafted roses. This is also not true. Own Roots Roses would only live longer then grafted roses, if the grafted roses had a virus. I would like to see a side by side test of two roses of the same time to see which lives the longest. The test would take a virus free Mr. Lincoln Own Roots and a virus free grafted Mr. Lincoln them side by side and test their life spans. I think the grafted rose being tougher and less likely to succumb to bad weather would live the longest. Each rose would need to receive equal amount of nurturing and the same soil and conditions for the test to be a fair test. I don’t like to read about fake claims for Own Roots Roses because I don’t like scams. I always look for evidence and run garden test before I believe claims about plants. I also keep notes from my garden. I started keeping notes in a notebook in the 90s. In 2003, I starting using computer files to keep garden notes. Notebook are ok, but it is hard to find particular information in a note-book. Keep your notes in documents so you can search for info by plant using the indexing of your computer. I see paper notebooks as a quaint way to keep notes from the past. Note books can be romantic, but are not practical. Keeping notes about what you planned each season helps keep from making the same garden mistake more than once. You will remember when you planted each plant and how it died. Store your garden notes in the cloud in case your computer crashes, and your house and back up are destroyed by fire or flood. Even if all is destroyed, the photos and notes you saved in the cloud will help you create your new garden.
Sterling Silver is considered one of the weakest roses, but I like him because of his lovely color. I have grown Sterling Silver three times. I am now growing Sterling Silver on grafted roots. I found a shady location for him. He has to be sprayed for fungal.
I bought Mr. Lincoln at Kmart, but he turned out to have Rose mosaic virus, and I had to destroy him. Sometimes roses with Rose mosaic virus can grow ok, but I was worried about inflecting the other roses, that I had bought at a better nursery with mosaic virus.
Stores in which I would not recommend buying roses are Walmart, Kmart, Home Depot, Lowe’s or any home improvement stores, Rite Aid or any drug store or grocery store. If you notice wax on the end of the canes of bare roots roses, this done to stop the roses from growing and allow to last longer in cold storage. But, the longer the rose remains wrapped in plastic and not growing and soil the weaker it becomes. I have never had a rose with wax on it live. But, if you are not very fussy and you are not going to work hard on your roses, there is no harm in buying from a big box stores. Just try your luck. I got one rose from Lowes that did well, and one that had a virus and died. It’s a gamble. In 2002 I bought a Peace Rose at Kmart for bare root for only $1.99 and it lived a long time and was a great virus free rose. In the past these virus were not so common? I have had hostas die of hosta virus, and hydrangeas that are infected, from even good nurseries. This year, I found some crocus in my garden had a virus as well. My cannas show signs of yellow stripping on the leaves that may be a virus.
Don’t believe the sites that tell you that own roots roses are more cold tolerate then grafted roses, because they are not. Roses grafted on Dr. Huey will be the best choice for cold climates. They also mention that the rose will never come back as Dr. Huey in cold weather, but even worse in cold weather with snow, the rose may not come back at all. Most of these site saying Own Roots Roses are the best thing since sliced bread are selling Own Roots Roses. Also they can still get a virus once planted in your garden. Most reputable rose growers no longer use virus root stocks to graft roses. But, stores big box stores that sell roses at discount prices have viruses. The next time you go to big box store look carefully at the roses they sell. You will notice signs of Rose mosaic virus on the lower leaves. These leaves are yellowed in a mottled pattern.
The types of roses that do well on Own Roots are fairly hardy to begin with. Some are carpet type roses, shrub roses that are not grafted hybrid tea roses. These smaller hardier roses are never grafted at all, so it is no special surprise about them living well on their own roots. Right now, the Jackson & Perkins website seems to have a good selection of own roots roses. I like Rogue Valley because they give you a lot of own roses at a low price. I like Angel Gardens in Florida because they have a reasonable price.
If you have the own roots roses shipped to you in a pot with soil, it will cost you a lot more, but be more likely to survive. There are all kind of regulations involving the shipping of plants with soil on the roots because of soil borne diseases. Often only bare roots are allowed to be shipped. A bare roots rose is a rose that is dug up, stripped of all its smaller hair like feeder roots and then wrapped up in plastic and mailed to you. The rose has already been injured, and so the chances of it coming back to life are not that great. This goes so even more with weaker own roots roses. The ideal way to grow own roses would be to clone them yourself, so they don’t have to be stripped or go into shock when being shipped. But, cloning roses is not something I know anything about, and I know it is not as easy as rooting a plant in water until it grows roots. Often shipping can be expensive. I would rather buy from local dealers if possible and help support them. I live near a good rose nursery called Kings in Santa Rosa. Regan Nursery sells roses in Fremont. Regan Nursery has a list of new roses that come out each year. I like to look at the list, and see what’s new. Most new roses are here today and gone within a few years. Think of them as limited editions. Only a smaller number of roses survives the test of time. It’s easy to learn the names these common roses that you can find almost everywhere. The biggest names in Roses are Peace and Mr. Lincoln. I have grown them both. Can you think any others? Leave a comment here.
Joyfulness did well at first, but then died. You can see in this photo how there is no graphed root portion and the leaves simple come out of ground on small stems.
To sum up: easy come easy go with own roots roses. Don’t pay too much for them, because they are not likely to live. I would suggest buying them in bulk, and hoping that some of them will survive, rather than spending 40 dollars on just one own roots rose. Everyone who grows roses should try an own roots rose at least once. Own Roots roses are becoming more easy to find and buy as time goes on.
Me: “Great! It’s been a really good growing season – plenty of sunshine and the pests don’t seem bad at all this year. We’ve got zucchini, peppers, tomatoes, and all the other summer vegetables practically coming out our ears! How’s your doing?”
Dad: “Terrible! I’ve given up. Calling it quits for this year.”
Me: “Why? What happened?”
Dad: “It’s this drought. The soil is parched and cracked and I can’t keep up with watering it! The vegetables are all dying and the weeds are taking over. I quit!”
Me: “I know this really good gardening book called Garden Imperative. The author recommends using lots of mulch to improve the soil and retain moisture. Did you mulch?”
Me: “The author also recommends adopting no-till soil management practices. You know… retiring the rototiller and instead building good soil from the top down. Did you do that?”
Me: “So let me guess… you did what you always do, and switched the tines around on your tiller, to have it make long, raised beds while it pulverizes the soil and kills beneficial soil organisms.”
Dad: “Yup…”Me: “And then those long raised beds dried out even faster because they have more surface area, and they’re harder to irrigate because the water runs right off, right?”
Me: “And now the only plants growing on your nicely rototilled beds are weeds?”
This is not the story of my life. This is a fictional story. Start at the last post in the blog. New posts come at the top. The first Chapter is marked Chapter One. Or read any chapter at random. Go to the right hand menu and select Fictional Story of Macy and Friends. Then scan to the bottom and start reading the story in the correct order.
I was so annoyed. I was just a kid, I think I must have been 12 or 13 and I had been taken to see the movie Grease with my mother, somewhere in San Jose. I may have been 11. I know Grease was opening, and before the Movie there was a short documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd. I had no idea who or what Lynyrd Skynyrd was. I wanted to see the movie Grease and the documentary seemed to go on forever, but it must have been half an hour or less. I only was able to pick out minor details, these guys were in a band, and they had all died or almost all of them had died in a plane crash. The film was mostly interviews with the members of the band before they had died. The documentary did not have any songs from Lynyrd Skynyrd or I would have been able to pick them out from hearing them on radio. Back then there was no Internet. No one had any idea what was going on. If you wanted to learn about a band, you had to buy music magazines or go to the main library downtown, and look at the magazines that they had stored on microfiche of newspaper articles. When I was older I attempted to research the band Devo by looking at microfiche and it was terrible. You had to look into a giant machine like a view master, and then scan the newspaper articles until you found the article you wanted. Then you literally had to take notes, if you wanted to save anything from the article. There may have been a print feature, which you had to ask the librarian to help you and pay for the copies.
So, I am watching this documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd, and I am thinking, when will this be over? Since then I have come around, and now I would have wanted to watch the document on Lynyrd Skynyrd even more than Grease, and I look for time to time for this documentary, but I never find it. It may have been someone’s pet project or a submission for a degree in film, that someone was shown as a short subject at this particular independent movie house someone in Santa Jose which is likely torn down by now. It could have been film someone shot with the desire to make a documentary on Lynyrd Skynyrd that was full length while they were still alive, but was then shortened to a piece about the plane crash. I am not even sure the movie was Grease, that is how much I have forgotten so I am not sure of my age at the time. If I knew for sure the movie was Grease I could pin point my age at the time I saw the movie.
The plane crash happened on my Birthday, not only that there is much more. The band did not want to fly on this plane, it was unsafe. There were all kinds of warning signs and premonitions NOT to go. But, the lead singer Ronnie Van Zant insisted that, if God said it was your time you had to go. He thought he would die before 30 and maybe he wanted that to be true? It is all good to trust in God. But, does God want you to truly stupid dangerous things and then claim it was his will after bad things happen? One can see how totally insane and bizarre the whole affair of the crash was, if you read the new accounts of it, published by Rollingstone.
I don’t have any special insight to contribute to the history of Lynyrd Skynyrd, but I would like to find out the name of the documentary and the film makers name. At the time, the plane crash must have been on the news, but I am sure they did not show any footage from the crash due to respect and privacy. The crash also happened in a forest somewhere that was not easy for news crews to get to. In fact, normally a very dry news anchor would read the news. So, I literally did not know who Lynyrd Skynyrd was or that they had died, but I could recognize the songs on the radio. Considering something so significant and important as the magic of Lynyrd Skynyrd, words fail me as I attempt to describe the genius the music. But, the quality and the power of the tracks stand for themselves. When I got to high school, the students demanded at the closing song for each dance be Free Bird and if Free Bird was not the closing song, they threatened to riot in the gym. But, they always used Free Bird to close the dance in my Freshman and sophomore years.
Notes of a Crocodile Book Review with spoilers
Written by Qiu Miaojin
Translated from the Chinese by Bonnie Huie
This translation from Chinese would have been better with a character guide included at the beginning. I could not figure out from the Chinese names which characters were male or female. I read a long passages thinking the narrator was speaking to woman only to find out, when the chapter was almost over, it was a male. This book gave me nightmares. I was not in on the joke that the Crocodile is a lesbian person, until I read the analyses online, after I was done. I skipped the chapters about the Crocodile, as I did not find them cute or interesting. Furthermore, the author kills herself due to depression and a failed relationship and not due to oppression or repression. But, over all not a bad book to read if one gets it free from the library. The book is short and easy to read quickly. I give it three stars. I also include it with my collection of works by authors who have killed themselves. Before the author died she wrote another book, that she left behind for publication after her death which explains that she killed herself due to her girlfriend not loving her anymore. I did not read this book, as I could not get it free, but the Kindle preview explains the whole issue.
The Chinook Camper was a lesser known alternative to the VW Camper. The Chinook was named for a Native American tribe, that is often now confused with the Chinook Helicopter on Google. The Chinook Camper was billed as a modern mid-century space age vehicle. The company has under gone changes of ownership, and the Chinook has greatly change in appearance over the years. The Toyota Chinook is most distinctive looking model. The camper was built on top of chassis of either Toyota, Ford or Chevy. The ones created after 2000 are much larger and more expensive, looking like modern RVs. The bigger models lack the cuteness of the vintage Chinooks, and don’t seem like the same vehicle. The price of new Chinooks was expensive, but they lacked reliability, and broke down a lot. The fiberglass body was light weight, and therefore better for fuel economy, but over time fiberglass tends to collect mold that grows from the outside in. Algae, lichens, and mosses may begin to grow on the body. If you have one, you really need to keep it in the garage and away from all types of moisture. This is why the Chinook is the cutest camper, that you can’t own due to the impractically. You will need to be able to fix the Chinook yourself or have unlimited funds to own a vintage Chinook. My favorite models are from the 70s.
From The Tin Can Tourist
“The first Toyota-Chinook Mini-Motorhome models sold in 1973-74 were built on a Toyota long-wheelbase half-ton truck chassis, powered by Toyota’s 18R motor with a standard rear axle. Since 1971, the company had manufactured one-piece molded fiberglass shells consisting of gel coat, ceramic shield and a single polyester skin laminate with plywood-stiffening panels.”
I have been growing Papaver somniferum var. paeoniflorum (Peony Poppies) for many years. The ones I grow are only decorative. I started by growing some breed seed poppies, but I found them boring.
One of them came back as a Peony Poppy which was pink, and I called it Pink Puffy Poppy.
I don’t like the name Peony because it is confused with Peonies which are a different plant. Peony poppy is also sometimes called double garden poppy because it produces large, double blooms that typically span 4 to 5 inches across. I replanted the seeds, but it did not come back as a Pink Peony. They may have been pollinated wrong. Then I noticed some red Peony Poppies growing in my neighbourhood, so I took a seed pod and I grew red Peony Poppies for a few years.
Someone gave me purple seeds and then I grew the my famous Purple Puffy Poppies. The Purples are even bigger and better than the reds. Sometimes they are more purple and sometimes more black. These are harder to grow then the red ones. The red ones are more easy to get to reseed.
I moved to Ukiah and I bought some seeds for Pink Ones online, but I did not find them as pretty as I hoped. Maybe they did not have enough sun? I grew them in almost full shade due to the summer heat issue in Ukiah.
This year one of my Poppies came back as an Oriental Poppy that was not a Peony. This may be due to cross-pollination. When you plant Papaver somniferum seeds you never know what kind of flower you will get. They will not take being transplanted. They will probably die if you try. You need to do direct sowing.
They are not dangerous, and I don’t think even if I made a huge effort I could get any opium from them. Wikipedia says “It is increasingly incorrect to call Papaver somniferum the opium poppy, as many varieties do not produce a significant amount of opium.” And that you need a lab to make them into Opium, and you would need to have several hundred of them in a huge field. They would have to the correct ones, which they do grow in Afghanistan. These decorative ones don’t make enough sap on the pods. Normally if you are making opium, you score the pod and wait and harvest the white sap. I tried these with the Peony Poppies and there was no sap that I could even see. The sap was clear liquid, and not even white and there was so little of it, like almost none. This could also be due to the poor growing conditions in San Francisco, and the lack of hot weather. I don’t score my seed pods, as it ruins the seed pods for the harvesting the seeds for next years flowers. I harvest the seeds and keep in seed envelopes until I want to plant them. In San Francisco I planted them in the spring, but I found out, they don’t like to germinate in hot weather. This year I will plant the seeds as soon as it get cool. It is unfair make these poppies outlaw plants, as they are harmless.
I also planted seeds for Salmon colored ones I bought on eBay, but none germinated. I tried to grow white Peonies, but no luck. I will have some seeds to trade with other gardeners this year again. They do like a rich soil and compost. Dig up your soil very deep. Unlike the smaller California poppies these large plants take up lots of space.
I planted Puffy Poppies in the summer with seeds from my San Francisco Garden, but they did not sprout until winter. This was not so great, and I had a lot of problems, but I finally have some blooming now. The seedling were too crowded. Thinning was not possible with killing most of them. The body count was high, only a few survived. The weather was cold.
Puffy Poppies like to be near others as they lean on each other for support or you can even use garden stakes. They don’t like wind. Wind will even kill or uproot them. You can grow one plant alone with a support if and only if there is no wind in the area. If your house blocks the wind, for example, this may work, otherwise grow them in groups. You have to thin them very carefully. If they are too crowded they are ruined. They like sandy soil and not clay soil. The also like hot sun. I do not believe the are illegal to grow, even the ones that have the most opium are still legal, but its harder to get the seeds for those. I saw some on eBay, but I was not sure if it was scam. I have not seen them in the retail stores. I have been living here to three years, and one thing I noticed if I fall plant they germinate fine, but then they can’t get enough sun to be strong plants. Planted in the warm season, they will not germinate. They do not like to be transplanted, and normally won’t survive. I think they may require a period of cold to germinate. The flower creates a seed pod, and drops the seeds on the ground. The germination only happens after a period cold. In San Francisco it was always cold in the summer and I grew them all year around. In Ukiah the summers are too hot. I am going to try to stratification by putting them in the refrigerator, because I am not getting the same good results in Ukiah. They all sprouted in the fall, but then died of too much rain and too much cold made the plants very weak. There are many online directions for the steps to take to make them break dormancy. Our fall weather is nice, and I want to have more of these growing, but pack after pack of seeds is not sprouting.
Do you have any tips? Leave them in comments. If you have seeds to trade with me email me via this blog under the contact page.
I started to read, and I noticed the strange wording of the sentences. I think it was written first in German and then translated into English. I can still make out what it is trying to convey, but the phrasing is very awkward. Instead of saying Columbine can be invasive, it warns of a “plague” of Columbines.
The site is ad-supported and uses your cookies to target ads that you want to buy from. The ads that showed up on my page were for dolls. The first time, I clicked there were no ads, but when I revisited the page, I could see ads. I think its good to have ads rather than to be nagged to give money all the time, such as with Wikipedia.
The take away was the my Columbine can survive to 20 below zero, so it should be alright. I planted one I bought at a nursery, and since not dormant, I worry. The nights have been very cold in Ukiah. If I wait too long to set plants in the ground in the spring the hot summers will kill them off. There is nothing online I can find anywhere else to say what is the cold tolerance of Columbine. Updated: I made a mistake. The 20 below zero is on the Celsius scale, but I think it will still be ok in zone 9. If not, I learned something. It says that the plant can live for about five years. Normally, I would remove mine in the winter. When I was gardening in San Francisco, I had a lack of space, so I wanted to put in a newer plant. I am going to test this Columbine to see if can live the winter. I bought one called Aquilegia x caerulea ‘Origami White’ in 2012, and it did not live the winter. The ones I would take out were the no name Columbines because they would make too many seeds.
David Foster Wallace wrote a story about a serial killer. Its in a book called Brief Interviews with Hideous Men. I don’t think the story has a title, but its on page 286 in the Kindle edition, and it is called interview number 20. Spoilers are to follow.
This is the best story in the whole book. The story is about a cad who likes to pick up women for one night stands. He sees a woman at a festival, and he wants to pick her up for sex, but he dismisses the idea of any further relationship because he thinks she is a hippy chick stereotype. He assumes she is not very smart, and will bore him over time with her predictability. However, after sex the woman tells him a story of how she was abducted and raped by a serial killer. She saved her own life by being so loving with him, that he could not bring himself to kill her. She never goes to police as she knows that he will either kill himself or not kill again. Why she never goes to the police is not clear, but it may of had something to do with that she loved him too much to report him. The story makes the pick up artist fall in love with the woman. As she is leaving he touches the hem of her dress to gesture that means, he does not want her to leave and that he loves her, but he is too overwhelmed to speak. It is not clear if she stays with him or leaves him. But, this is as close to a happy ending as David Foster Wallace ever gives his readers. Normally, David Foster Wallace won’t end a story at all or his stories end tragically. Do you have a question or comment? Feel free to leave a message.
“And yet I did not fall in love with her until she had related the story of the unbelievably horrifying incident in which she was brutally accosted and held captive and raped and very nearly killed.”
Woodleaf and Macy decide they would like to build a time machine. Woodleaf was forced to leave his lovely San Diego home that he shared with Ann, when it was determined that Ann did not exist. She may have existed, but she never met Woodleaf. Retreating to the boredom of Castle Fluffy Clouds, Woodleaf endeavors to construct a time machine. His first thought is to travel back in time and convince Mengele to establishment himself as a resident of Nueva Germania before his death in 1979. Macy would love to travel back to 1978, but South America, she feels is too dangerous. Macy and Woodleaf engage in a spirited discussion on the pros and cons of the Mengele situation. Macy points out the Mengele, if he was addressed as Mengele, would be a dangerous man. He may kill them, if he believed they knew his true identity. Mengele’s desire for secrecy would make the establish of the Mengele Shire nearly impossible. There would have to be some way to have Mengele claim the building in his lifetime, and there is no way he would do that. Macy also points out there would be very little market interest in a Mengele Shire. They would be unlikely to sell any tickets to go see it. As his Public Rep, she wishes he would drop the whole Mengele scheme.
After much debate they decide upon an easier task. Macy’s idea is to travel to 1966 and convince Brian Wilson of The Beach Boys to finish the Smile Album. This task will serve as a good test of the time machine, because even if it fails not much seems to hang in the balance of Smile being finished or unfinished. If it was finished it may have been a great work music, that would have stood to rival the Beatles. Although Smile has been finished, if it had been finished in the middle of Brian Wilson great creative period, it may have even outshined the Beatles, who were arguing with each other. The Magically Mystery Tour with the exception of “I Am The Walrus” was much less successful than Sargent Pepper. On The White Album Lennon and McCartney each wrote their songs independently from each other. This broke up the most explosive creative powerhouse writing teams in the history of popular music. The Beatles were on the decline, and did not come back at full strength until The Abbey Road Album in 1969. This left an opening for the Brian Wilson to over take them, if even for a short time. The Beach Boys could have been the most popular band in the entire world.
Brian wanted to Smile to be a more creative album then Rubber Soul. He was tired of surf music, which he found to be trivial. He was working with new lyric writers, because he did not want to use the same old surf lyrics written by Mike Love. But, the fans loved Mike Love’s voice and his lyrics, and the Surf Culture American Dream Life Style. They were not going to buy into Smile. They would not give it a chance. It would have been something so great that it could not be denied. In order to make the project work, they need to intercept Brian after he had heard Rubber Soul and before he had heard the single Strawberry Fields Forever. It has been reported the Strawberry Fields Forever was so creative that it made Brain give up. Rubber Soul was released December 3, 1965 and Strawberry Fields Forever was releases as a single on February 13, 1967. They could tell Brian that John Lennon was ultimately unhappy with Strawberry Fields. George Martin came up with the idea to create the false ending. Many of the experimental sounds on Strawberry Fields were created by accident. This knowledge from the future could make Brain focus himself and do better. He could have finished Smile instead of creating many short song fragments or he could have blended the microtracks into one long flow as the Beatles did on the second side of Abbey Road.
Rubber Soul was released December 3, 1965, and Strawberry Fields Forever was released as a single on February 13, 1967. There is a very short time period in which Brain could be influenced. The question would be how to approach him. Macy wonders if it would be possible to also save Sharon Tate by pointed out that Manson’s Music would be successful in the future and making Manson’s recording deal happen. Dennis Wilson had been a close personal friend of Charles Manson, because Manson had moved his family into Dennis’s home. Manson would have been so pleased with his record deal, he probably would have never thought of the idea to start a race war. Later in 1983 she could save Dennis from drowning, but first she should save John Lennon from being assassinated on December 8, 1980. But, when Macy looks at the date February 13th of the release of Strawberry Fields, she wonders if she should instead try to create a delay in the release of Strawberry Fields. Putting the release off even one day to February 14th, 1967 Valentines Day could be enough to change all the events that followed.
Macy: There are too many things we could be or should be doing when we travel back in time. It’s hard to know which one to focus on first, as one change could affect all of the other events.
They also consider saving JFK, but that has been done before in a novel by Stephen King, which failed miserably. Also there could be an issue in traveling back to 1963, before either of them were born, as they may disappear. Maybe there is a rule, that you can’t travel to the time before you were born as you may not exist anymore in that time period? Jack, however, is opposed to the Smile Project. He dislikes Brian Wilson, and does not appreciate the music of the Beach Boys.
Woodleaf hangs an ugly, brown painting of Sunny Woodleaf on her website, and refuses to update it. In case, they never come back from the time travel experiment, and become trapped in the past, this will be the last the world will ever see of Sunny Woodleaf. As Sunny Woodleaf does not exist she won’t be offended. The brown color of the ugly art work seems to indicate that Woodleaf is somewhat displeased. White is Woodleaf’s signature color. He likes everything to be white. He famously refuses to eat foods that are not white or sit on furniture that is not white.
It would not be such a bad thing if I could not come back from 1966, and I had to wait out the time in order to get to 2018, thinks Macy. But Jack is having none of it. Fortunately, Jack is very distracted with some online political debates, and Macy manages to leave without him noticing she is gone. Only after she leaves does the thought occur to her, that she was born on October 25, 1965, and she will never live long enough to come back to 2018. It will be a one way trip with no return possible, unless the time machine can carry them back in the present. Travel to the future seems harder than travel to the past, because the future has not happened yet. But, the past is already gone, so prehaps it is possible to travel to the future and not the past. They only need to step into the time machine and see what happens.
They must prepare for the trip however, by taking cash that is minted before 1966. The Stephen King Book about saving JFK 11/22/63 goes over a list of things one needs to travel into the past and blend in. However, the book was so unbearable that Macy did not manage to finish the book. She is not sure if the main character saved JFK. The uninteresting and unimportant pot boiler characters created by Stephen King to pull on our emotional heart-strings and waste space and time caused Macy to stop listening to the Audible Audio Book, before the character even got to the day of the assassination. For some unknown reason the character did not travel straight to the correct day, but rather many years earlier then 1966, and was forced to live out an entire life waiting for the day. If traveling to 1966 is successful, then they could go directly from 1966 to 1963? Macy realizes she did not read the how to do it part. She does not know how to stop the assassination of JFK.
Woodleaf thinks they could arrive in South American shortly after Menegle’s death and set up the shire. He does not care about the historical accuracy as long as the tickets sell. He could start by being on the death scene, and collecting as many of Menegle’s belongings as possible after his death. No one would be likely to want them, and Woodleaf should be able to buy them with the South American Currency they will bring with them as part of the preparations. Then he can find or buy some old abandoned hut in Nueva Germania, and place Menegle’s belonging inside and take photos. Returning to the year 2005, he can place the photos on his Planet Juniper Website. The project will be successful this time, he thinks optimistically.
Woodleaf has found a new photo. He shows the photo to Macy.
Woodleaf: This could be Menegle’s house in Nueva Germania.
Macy: But, where is really?
Woodleaf: I don’t know. I am going to guess it’s an old photo of a structure on Angel Island. I found it a cafe. Someone must have left it behind. It could be any place.
Macy: It is much better then that pile of bricks you were using before. It look at least like it could have been some sort of structure. It’s a place that he could have lived, and it would be run down over time. You can say the real structure is even more dilapidated in current time. But, what is his motivation for wanting to live in Nueva Germania?
Woodleaf: Other then he could foresee into the future and want to help me, I don’t know. I have to think of a longer backstory. This could take some time.
Lauren’s note: We will patiently wait for Woodleaf to write a backstory.
Much later on the same day
Woodleaf: I came up with a backstory! I did some research after watching a tv program on Josef Mengele. They show a house like structure with an address of 5773, in São Paulo, Brazil, but they don’t give the street name. I was looking for the street name.
I am sure something will come to me, but I am not quite sure how to get Mengele into a house in Nueva Germania.
Macy: Mengele was seen in a sandwich shop in 2002, by a kind person who felt that Mengele did not do any of these things willing, but as a result of remote programing and mind control.
Woodleaf: That won’t work. Mengele was born in 1911, and that would make him 91 years old.
Macy: But, it is still possible, but not likely. If he was a very healthy individual that he would be able to go places.
Woodleaf: Not likely, he had high blood pressure. He could have still been alive, but this is a big IF, but still that does not get him into a house in Nueva Germania that I can use for my shrine.
An electronic voice on Woodleaf’s Phone announces, “Dr. Evil calling”.
Normally, Woodleaf would not take his call, but he want a distraction from this decision, of what time period to selection for travel.
Woodleaf answers the call, and puts it on speaker phone, so Macy can hear.
Dr. Evil: Woodleaf don’t leave on your trip. I want to have you booked as a nostalgia act. You should tour as Placid as doing the moldy oldies. There is a whole circuit of venues you can perform at, State Fairs and Retirement Communities.
Woodleaf: (annoyed) My age is 35.
Macy thinks: Woodleaf’s been 35 for the last 20 years.
Woodleaf: If you think this means I am going to give up, you are mistaken Dr. Evil. I am sure to become famous, any day now. Once I get back from my Time Machine Trip and change history you will be sorry, that you laughed at me.
Woodleaf slams down the phone.
Woodleaf to Macy: I don’t know what we should do now. I have been thrown off my concentration. I don’t know what would be the best year to touch down in. If we can only travel back in time once, we have to do it very carefully.
Woodleaf is trapped in inertia. Macy eventually gets tired, and goes back home to Jack, without having time traveled.
Woodleaf has a dream in which the ghost of Sunny Woodleaf comes to him dressed as Doll, and tells him to go back in time and murder Mengele’s Cat. Most people don’t know Mengele had a cat named Fluffy.
The next day, Macy had a strange story to tell.
Macy: Sunny Woodleaf melted away into an ectoplasmic puddle of white plastic, so I sweep her into a dustpan. I found my big funnel, and I put her into an empty plastic two-liter soda bottle. Then I put her out with recycling. Sunny came to my house in the middle of the night, with plans to record a You Tube Video to prove that she was real and was married to Woodleaf. She had ideas like showing off her ring, singing and doing a short dance with Woodleaf appearing somewhere in the frame. When I opened the door, I could see she was much changed from her previous appearance. I could recognize her by traditional costume. But, clearly something was wrong with her mentally. I would probably, put this down to associating with someone as crazy and capricious as Woodleaf. He changes his mind every minute of the day. Then the recycling truck came while I was asleep, and now my blue bin is empty. I have no idea if this was a dream, or if it really happened! I was so caught up in the moment I forget to take a photo to record the incident. Woodleaf said, it hardly matters, as her music does not sell. Then I got the idea to market her music for weight loss. Listening to her music creates nausea, and she melted away to just nothing. She weighs zero pounds, and no more than just a few ounces. She has been recycled, so she can become a lawn chair, in the future.
The next day Macy receives a call from Woodleaf.
Woodleaf: I just want you to know, I created another fake person, Mark Devo. That means, I can still be married to Sunny Woodleaf.
Macy: (Nervously) Ah yes, David, there is something I need to tell you about Sunny Woodleaf.
Woodleaf: Mark Devo is really myself! I combined the name the lead singer of Devo with the idea, similar to the Ramones, that each one in the band should take the last name Devo. There is Mark Devo, Jerry Devo and some other guys. Do you know who there are?
Macy: I think there is a Bob Devo.
Woodleaf: Could there be a John Devo?
Macy: Unfortunately, I may have recycled Sunny Woodleaf, last night.
Woodleaf: I have to go! The doorbell has rung, and I am expecting a delivery of Obetrol so I can go doubling.
Woodleaf runs to the front door. He signs for the package, but when he opens it, instead of Obetrol, there are only some dead flowers and dried up twigs inside. He turns the box over and looks at the insides very careful to see if the Obetrol is inside, but its not there.
Feeling extremely disappointed, he decided to instead consume a large amount of legal hash. Woodleaf falls asleep, and has the most fascinating dreams. He is swimming underwater, he can breathe underwater. As he comes to the surface, he sees the pump white legs of senior ladies in inner tubes performing water exercises, so he dives down lower, and he sees a crystal place on the floor of the ocean.
The next morning he wants to remember these dreams, but they slip away from him.
The Girl Reporter Interviews Mark Devo
GR: Can you confirm the rumors that you are married to Sunny?
Mark Devo: Of course, I am not married to Sunny Woodleaf. The idea is crazy.
GR: Can you comment on how these rumors got started?
Mark Devo: David Woodleaf wanted to have a little joke. He figured he would get people to notice her lack of singing and music ability if they wanted to correct the posting in Wikipedia.
GR: Sunny Woodleaf maintains a presences in the Fashion World Today. It’s too bad she doesn’t exist.
I have some comments about Lindsey Buckingham being fired from Fleetwood Mac. We don’t really know what is going on. I am upset about it, because I had heard an interview with Lindsey Buckingham for the first time with Dan Rather which made me feel like I got to know the good side of Lindsey Buckingham. I assume there is a bad side, and a violent temper that I don’t know about. I also read in an article, Lindsey Buckingham: Rock’s biggest jerk or misunderstood genius in the Washington Post, which said, he was having tantrums on stage, and being cruel to Stevie Nicks.
I can’t make an judgments on whose fault it was, but I don’t like reading about the replacement members making statements about how wonderful everything is and how great the tour is going to be without Lindsey Buckingham. I just can’t become enthusiastic about a tour without Lindsey Buckingham. My favorite members of the band were never Mick Fleetwood, John McVie, and Christine McVie. I felt drawn to the Peter Green, Bob Welch, Lindsey Buckingham because I felt their music was more creative than Mick and McVie sound. Stevie Nicks is in a class by herself, I liked her work with Fleetwood Mac. I liked her solo work, but I never bought her records. Stevie Nicks was played so often on the radio, that I felt no need to ever seek out her music. The entire Rumors album was ruined by being over played on the radio. Choices were limited, by technology and budget, so just took whatever music I could get in 70s. Rumors was a special case, it was played over and over for about 20 years on the radio. Occasionally I would rebel and turn the channel or turn the radio off.
Many people don’t know, and I was shocked to find out that Ace Frehley and Peter Criss had been replaced from the Band Kiss by men who wore the same make up. Can a band just take members and discard them and replacement them with other people? No they can’t, it won’t be the same band.
Before the internet I did even know who the line up was for Fleetwood Mac. One could find out things if they were to read music magazines, but I did not have the time to read them or even the interest. In 1984, Go Insane by Lindsey Buckingham was played on MTV, and I did not even know he was connected to Fleetwood Mac. I even had the double album Tusk, but I did not read the liner notes. I just thought of Lindsey Buckingham as a New Wave Artist. But, once I learned his name, I later learned that Tusk was mostly Lindsey Buckingham’s idea. Then I realized he had been in Fleetwood Mac. I did not have to buy Lindsey Buckingham’s record because was able to heard it on MTV and the radio. I still really like Go Insane very much. I did buy the song in the age of playing music on iTunes. In the interview with Dan Rather, I learned Go Insane was about Stevie Nicks and the lyric “She’s A lot Like You” was about Carol Ann Harris whom Lindsey was married to at the time. At the very moment when I was getting interested in Lindsey Buckingham and even thinking of buying some of the Tell All Books about Fleetwood Mac, Lindsey Buckingham is fired. I was even thinking a could use some of the material in the books as an inspiration to write fiction. I was seeing a tragic love story between Lindsey Buckingham and Stevie Nicks who waited too long to love and commit to each other, and now they have run out of time.
My favorite Fleetwood Mac song had always been the song Hypnotized by Bob Welch, and although I did not know who he was either. I loved the song Oh Well by Peter Green. I don’t thing everything did Lindsey Buckingham fantastic. I did not really like the songs Second Hand News and Go Your Own Way. My favorite track on Rumors was You Make Loving Fun. I feel that it’s a mistake for Fleetwood Mac to throw someone away in the band, and then not even tell us why.
Lindsey Buckingham is still fired, and the tour is going to happen with these other people who don’t mean anything to me. It feels like the time Adam Ant said, he was going on tour with someone who was a guitarist for the Smiths. I do know the The Smiths, clearly, I do like Morrissey, but I don’t know anyone in his band. How many people am I expected to know who are in groups, when I am not a super fan. Only super fan know all the members in the band people. Of course Adam Ant did what rapper do. He placed the names of the members of his band inside his song lyrics. The most memorable of these was Marc Pirroni in the song a Man called Marco. My understanding is the Marco is the genius song writer and Ant is the singer and without Marco Adam Ant can’t create new material. And from reading lyrics Marco won’t work with Adam anymore, citing that Adam is too crazy to work with. This stems from the incident in which Adam Ant pulled out a fake gun which was a starting pistol at a bar in England, where guns are illegal.
I checked all the books on Fleetwood Mac, I could get for free at the Library and I found out Peter Green went to a party at Commune in Munich called The High Fish Commune and he was given bad acid. He had a nervous breakdown and refused to leave the Commune, and he did leave at some point and now he is burned out, and he can’t do reunion tours.
“The High-Fish Commune was a commune in Munich formed at the end of the 1960s. The name is a play on words, as Hai-fisch is the German for shark. Rainer Langhans mentions in his autobiography that he and Uschi Obermaier met Peter Green and others of Fleetwood Mac in 1970 in Munich, where they invited them to their “High-Fish-Commune”. Here the drinks were laced with LSD, which particularly affected Green. The communards were not really interested in Peter Green. They just wanted to get in contact with the Rolling Stones’ guitarist, Mick Taylor: Langhans and Obermaier wished to organize a “Bavarian Woodstock”. They wanted Jimi Hendrix and “The Rolling Stones” to be the leading acts of their Bavarian open air festival. They needed the “Green God” just to get in contact with “The Rolling Stones” via Mick Taylor.\
They gave him the LSD as sort of gag, and not really because they wanted him to stay with them forever. He ended up insane. At first he wanted to give away all of his money and he did, and then he wanted money again. He was in prison for a weapons charge. I could not really make up anything like this. It seems like fiction. I read an interview with Peter Green from 1994. He had lost track of time, and he could not do music anymore. This could have been due to the electroshock therapy which destroys parts of the brain. Clearly, the more prudent course of action would be to wait and see if he could improve with rest. I thought electroshock therapy was only given to people with depression. I learned about electroshock therapy even more by reading David Foster Wallace who had electroshock therapy, and it did not work he killed himself. I can’t think of any reason that anyone should have electroshock therapy even for very bad depression because Ketamine will work without destroying the brain. The problem with Ketamine is it’s too expensive for average people to be able to afford and one has to keep taking it forever, apparently. I read a lot about Ketamine and it will work, but it will wear off and it’s not a cure. I think the course of treatment costs $8,000, and not due to the cost of the drug, but the cost of having the personnel on hand to administer it. Furthermore, electroshock therapy does not work for depression either long-term. Just like Ketamine, it only works for time period of maybe 6 to 9 months. Peter Green is just another casualty of a broken mental health system that can’t really fix anyone.
There are more dangers to take street Ketamine as it can cause addiction and a mental retreat in an imaginary fantasy world or kidney pain which will require a kidney transplant or a bladder transplant. I saw a story about a boy who was so addicted he continued to still use Ketamine even after getting such a transplant. He wanted to stay forever in his imaginary dream world. I can see the appeal of such a thing, but it’s not really and it bound to catch up with one sooner or later.
Updated again on April 29, 2018
I have been reading up on the Fleetwood Mac situation, and it does not make sense. They can still tour without Lindsey Buckingham, if they insist with the new members that they want, without actually firing him from the band.
I have been taking Singulair (montelukast) for asthma and allergies. I don’t normally have nightmares, but Singulair causes them. I was living with my boyfriend who is a demon named Jack with a terrible temper. Jack is Black Irish and I find him to be incredibly handsome and totally sexy. Jack is 20 years younger than me as well. William S. Burroughs had a boyfriend named John Brady, who could therefore be called Jack, but Burroughs called him Johnny. That is where I picked the name Jack for the boyfriend character. It seemed that Burroughs abandoned Johnny when he moved to America. He wanted Johnny to come with him, but only if he would stop drinking and get a proper job. He wanted Johnny to become a policeman in New York, as they were mostly Irish. Johnny did not want to stop drinking, and he was always begging for money. This seemed to annoy Burroughs and he cut Johnny off and told his friends, not to give Johnny anymore money. I am basing all of this on the definitive biography of Book, CallMe Burroughs: A Life by Barry Miles. Barry Miles based it on letters that Burroughs had written to his friends about John Brady. It’s all very interesting, if you read the book. I don’t want to give it all away. After John Brady disappeared Burroughs wanted to contact him, and could not find him, so he wrote Johnny into some of his books and stories as a character who was a policemen’s son. Burroughs also had a habit of ending relationships by moving away. But, he still wanted to stay in touch. He had a difficult relationship with Irish people. He believed he was molested as a child by his nurse who was Irish. In the book Junkie, he makes an Irish friend who helps him get Junk. Yet, he would still go on racists tirades about the Irish and about the Jews, in spite of the fact, that Allen Ginsberg who was Jewish was his closest life time friend. Burroughs was a very complex man, but he was practical. He would say things, but then do things to contradict the things he said. Above all he would befriend anyone of any race or religion even if he professed not to like them, if that person was useful to him. He was very lonely, and always seeking out friends. He hated to let friends go.
In the dream the cable guy came to our house and some how Jack got into a fight with him and punched him and knocked him out. He was still alive. Jack locked him up in a room and then we talked over what to do with him. Jack was of the feeling he would go to the police, and we could never let him go. We would have to kill him. I mentioned this was a nightmare. Unlike the usually dreams I have that end with love and peace, this one ended after Jack really killed him and I was so upset, I woke up with a start and it took me two hours to get back to sleep.
Singulair is known for causing nightmare. If you look it up and research it, you will find a number of reports. I normally take it in the morning because of that. Singulair does not make me tired, and it seems to give me energy. So maybe my story can help you decide about Singulair.
Updated: June 23 2018 I believe some damage was done to the crawl space of my house by the Dish installers. The cost of this damage will cost one thousand dollars to fix and I don’t see what recourse I have, as I can not prove Dish crushed my duct work.
Xfinity refuses to Service Ukiah
If you want a Xfinity DVR in Ukiah, you will get this outdated box from the 90s.
This is a Comcast Box, and not the new X1 box that other people are allowed to have.
Xfinity is either too lazy, or too cheap or does not care enough to construct a line to Ukiah. As soon as they do I am dumping Dish and getting an X1 Box.
I moved from San Francisco to Ukiah, and when I was living in San Francisco, I had an X1 Xfinity Box, and it was the best and most advanced DVR I ever had used. I was an early adapter of TiVo. I got TiVo, because I used to listen to Howard Stern (before he changed to Sirius radio) on FM radio. Stern talked about TiVo, so I decided to try it. I was happy with TiVo for many years. But, things began to change. Xfinity is the same company as Comcast. Xfinity did not want TiVo to make any money so they began to sabotage TiVo. They fixed things so TiVo would not work with Comcast, and began to offer much lower prices on their own DVR.
I tired the Comcast DVR(shown above) and it was terrible, so I dumped Comcast in favor or Direct TV. I had Direct TV and TiVo for two years, but it did not work out, so I went back to Comcast. Comcast became Xfinity. I was happy with my X1 Box, but when I moved to Ukiah, I could not get an X1 box here.
Instead they gave me the same old terrible DVR from the 90s. I call it Grandfather’s DVR. I thought about getting Dish, but Dish was way over priced. I decided to wait for an X1. However, Xfinity refuses to begin to construct a line to service Ukiah. Xfinity is a very rich company, but they won’t give back to the us, by doing a little construction. As far as I know they have not even started to build a line. They refuse to acknowlegde there is even an issue with the line. I asked them many times for a date in which they would start or complete the line, but I have never gotten a straight answer, other then at some vauge time in the future.
Grandfather’s DVR only tapes two shows at once. The Olympics was ruined. After two years of waiting for an X1 box, I gave up and got Dish. I still have Comcast for my internet.
The Hopper 2000 fails to work. I am not able to tape shows, and I am not able to find shows. It is hard to explain what is going on, but it often fails to tape a show for NO reason. Sometimes later the show will show up. I spend hours struggling to program and reprogram the Hopper to tape my shows properly, only to have it fail to work.
Today I got up at 7am, but instead of turning on Good Morning America, I made coffee and did a few things around the house. At 7:30 I went to turn on GMA , and it was not taping. It gave me the option to start taping, so I clicked ok. It began to tape, but I had missed the first half hour. Now I have to be a slave to the times of my shows and constantly check them to make sure they are taping. I can watch it GMA tomorrow on Hulu, one day late, but the point is I pay $80 per month, and there is no excuse for this failure. Furthermore no other programs were taping at the time. There was no excuse for the Hopper 2000 which claims to have four tuners to not tape a single show on even one tuner. I called tech support for Dish and the representative refused to replace the Hooper 2000. He came up with excuse after excuse for why GMA failed to tape, such as it was a low priority, but I had fixed the schedule to make GMA and Days of Our lives numbers 1 and 2 priority. For some reason all the new shows I taped moved GMA, but not Days down to a low priority. Now only this but Days of Our Live has failed to tape on Bravo for the last two weeks. I was not that into the old episodes of Days of Our Lives that are rerun on Bravo, so in my despair, I have not even tried to fix this issue.
I looked at my timer options and it clearly states that new shows are to be added as the lowest priority. I checked the options over and over. Instead of fixing the issue the representative gave me a chance to replace the Hopper 2000 with the Hooper 3. I said, why was I not given this chance to have a Hooper 3 to begin with? I have only had Dish for about a month. I don’t feel confident that the Hooper 3 will work either.
What I really want is an X1 Box. The X1 box works better then even the best TiVo. I tired to use the TiVo Bolt for a while in Ukiah, but it failed to work after about 9 months it stopped working at all. I also lost an entire years membership to TiVo, because they charged me $149 dollars for a full years service on my credit card without asking me or notifying me that they had done so. TiVo stopped working about two months after I had paid the full $149, and TiVo did not refund my money. Needless to say, I am not happy with TiVo, but I would still take it here in Ukiah if it worked, but right now that is not an option. The only Tivo that I really liked was the early Tivo that used a landline to get the programming information. Ever since the HD revolution Tivo has been sadly lacking.
The Dish Hopper is the slowest DVR I have ever used. Each time I press a button there is a very long lag time to move to the next step. There is no Live TV button. They claim there is a Live TV button, but that does not work. To watch Live TV, I have to either go to the Guide which is very slow and pick the show even if I am already on the correct channel. The show plays as a picture with in the menu, or I have to go to the recording of the show and click Live TV. Most of the time I want to watch the show from the beginning and that option is three options down on the very slow remote. I can not just press record unless I am in the big picture and there is no short cut to get there.
I don’t want to upgrade to the Hopper 3, due to the fact, the Hopper 2000, should be good enough, but it is NOT good enough. If it would do what is should to do, which is tape four shows at once, and not fail to tape a simple program. There are many issues with loading. If I want to select a certain episode of show frist I have to go to icon which contains all the show of any program for example “Star Trek”. Then I have to pick out the episode I would like to watch, example “Mirror Mirror”, then I have to select Mirror Mirror. At this point the Hooper 2000 which has been very slow all along gets even slower The wheels go round and round. The Hopper is thinking about bringing up this show. I wait for a while, then I get bored and go off to do something else. I return to the set, and its back on Live TV. I have to start all over again to watch a show. Tivo would never behave like this. Each time I selected a Show on Tivo it would quickly get me that show. I never noticed any lag time. I don’t understand why Dish is going backwards in technology. Even the oldest and most primative Tivo was faster the the Dish Hooper. The will update this blog to review the Hopper 3 in the future.
Updated April 11, 2018
It turned out, they had given me something called the Hopper 2000 and not even the Hopper 2. I told them on the phone when I ordered Dish I was a very big DVR person, and I was still given a primative peice of equipement that is little better then Grandfather’s DVR. The Hooper 3 is working perfectly with no problems so far. I have no idea why when I told them, I was doing it all for a better DVR that I would get the lowest one and be given no choice. Stand up for your rights. Don’t accept a broken peice of junk. They have better ones, if you demand them.
Lynn Samuels dies and I am forced to eat a Psychedelic Mushroom
The year was 2011 and it was Christmas Time
In the movie Performance the character eats a Psychedelic Mushroom which is not psilocybin mushroom, but a Fly Agaric (Amanita muscaria var. muscaria).
I had no way to get psilocybin mushrooms, but I found some Fly Agaric Mushrooms. I did not know what to do with them. I dried them out and I was afraid to take them. I was in Palm Springs when Lynn Samuels. I had a rental car and it had Sirius Radio. So on Christmas Eve I listed to Lynn. They had moved her to 7am local time, but from 10am to 1pm New York Time on Saturday and Sunday. I listened to the Christmas Eve show in which she did her usually Christmas Songs as far as I recall. She was Jewish, but she loved to have Christmas Carols and she would sing along and sometimes get callers to sing with her. With eager anticipation, I awaited her live Christmas Day Show. I was in the car driving to Joshua Tree National Park. The drive was long and boring, so I was horrified to find that instead of her live Christmas Day Show they played a rerun of her Christmas Eve Show. I had no idea she was dead. They came to her house, because she was supposed to call in her show, but she was dead so they said nothing. The next weekend, I waited for her show again, and instead they had Alex Bennett doing a Tribute show because she was dead. I was back home and in a suicidal gesture I eat the Fly Agaric Mushroom. It was all dried up and losing quality. It tasted like chicken. It did not have a bad taste, but at once I got a terrible head ache. I had to lie down. I fell into a deep dreamless sleep. When I woke up I was ok, but I did not have any kind of Psychedelic Experience and Lynn was still dead. She died from smoking, and not exercising of a major heart attack in her sleep. She was 69.
Later I had several dreams about her. I dreamed, she was no dead, but merely faked her death. She moved to San Francisco and started to do her show right in the same downtown Studio that Alex Bennett used to do his show from. I had been to see Alex’s show once in the 80s.
I arrived late at Lynn’s show which she did live daily before a studio audience.
She was doing her show, but it was only the last hour of a four hour show. Lynn told me, I was too late and show (like her life) was almost over and would not give me any help for it. She gave me a record (an LP) of her show to thank me for stopping by and thanked me for my interest in her show. She had so many fans, she did not need me at all. As for the record upon taking it home I thought would be her show, but it was something else. It was the replacement show they hired to replace her because she was dead. I was back in my old childhood room, but it was bigger. I had stereo, and it was a good one, but other types of computers had not been invented. I put on the record and heard the show. It was a group of mixed men and women talking quietly and politely to each other without any debate. They all had soft FM sort of voices. If you remember what an FM DJ sounded like, they speak so as not to jar you from the groove of the music. They did not play any music other then All You Need Is Love by the Beatles. They played this towards the end of the show, and I had two records of their shows. I put on the second one, and also heard the All you need is Love song again. I wrote down the dream as soon as I woke up, which is why I remember it is great detail.
In order to judge which songs are Psychedelic, I have developed a point rating system
one point for each quality, but the number one on the list is two points
1. changes in time temp (2 points)
2. subject of lyrics is Psychedelic
3. acid guitar(s)
4. sitars, cow bells, organ, tambourine or other period sounding instruments
5. long trippy musical passage or passages
6. time period 60s and early 70s pre disco and pre 1975
The higher the song rates the more Psychedelic on the scale and the more worthy of being on the list of Psychedelic songs. I don’t include songs that are only protest folk songs, that would go on a separate list of protest music. This was music to protest the war in Vietnam.
I think only The Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers fulfills all six requirements. This makes The Time Has Come Today, the winner as the most Psychedelic song.
The second most Psychedelic song is Eight Miles High by The Byrds
Spinning Wheel by Blood, Sweat & Tears (This song is a winner due to the lyrics, the changes in tempo, the long musical passages, the song is written in 1969 making in fall with in the correct time period, and it even has cow bells. It is not often included on lists, but it fits all of criteria expect for not having acid guitars.)
Other very important Psychedelic Songs to include in lists:
Beatles Songs (not a complete list)
A Day in a Life about Tara Browne who was killed in a car crash
I Am The Walrus (reported to say Smoke Pot, Everybody Smoke Pot)
Blue Jay Way (the tape runs backward to create the sound, this sound is made by backwards tapes, which is not the same as backwards masking.
Backmasking is a recording technique in which a sound or message is recorded backward onto a track that is meant to be played forward. Backmasking is a deliberate process, whereas a message found through phonetic reversal may be unintentional.
Strawberry Fields Forever is about a place John would go as a boy to play with other kids away from adult eyes.
Lucy in the Star with Diamonds and the Elton John Version has a good long organ passage which sounds Psychedelic
Good Vibrations the Long Version by the Beach Boys & Heroes and Villains
Donovan many of his songs are Psychedelic, Hurdy Gurdy Man, Season of The Witch, Sunshine Superman, and a lesser known track called Super Lungs (She’s my Super Girl) This song is about a young school girl who smokes pot and hangs out with Donovan. Donovan had a thing for young girls.
The Doors Light My Fire has long musical passages, but other songs by Doors could be considered Psychedelic due to the lyrics by Jimi Morrison and the musical passages.
Deja Vu by Crosby Stills & Nash (check on the newly released demo version)
Dark Star Crosby Stills & Nash by not the Grateful Dead Song
Marrakesh Express by Crosby Stills & Nash
Casey Jones by The Grateful Dead and One Toke Over the Line by Brewer & Shipley
Uncle John’s Band by The Grateful Dead (a hippy song but it has a harmony of voices similar to Crosby Still and Nash.)
King Crimson had two worthy songs The Court of the Crimson King and
Thela Hun Ginjeet has an pre rap version of rap music in which the band member, Adrian Belew, recounts his experience in a bad neighborhood when he was walking the street with his tape machine looking for sounds to record. They included the taped conversation in the mix. I had thought they wrote a script for this, but they did not. This is what I would call a bad acid trip song. This song is a bit late for Psychedelic Status as it was record in 1980 in New York right after the John Lennon Assassination.
Mama Told Me Not to Come by Three Dog Night
I Had Too Much to Dream (Last Night) by the Electric Prunes
Amboy Dukes- The Journey to the Center of the mind
Pictures of Matchstick Men – Status Quo
Incense and Peppermint – Strawberry Alarm Clock
Time of the Season – The Zombies
Santana – Jingo and Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman
Sunshine Of Your Love – Cream
My Green Tambourine – The Lemon Pipers
Not So Sweet Martha Lorraine – Country Joe and the Fish
The Yardbirds – For Your Love and Shapes of Things
Fresh Air – Quicksilver Messenger Company (Have Another Hit)
Psychotic Reaction – Count Five
Happy Together – The Turtles
Tuesday Afternoon & Ride My See Saw – The Moody Blues
Roundabout – Yes ( Note: Yes is more progressive rock)
Magic Carpet Ride – Steppenwolf
Are You Experienced and Purple Haze- Jimi Hendrix Experience (many Hendrix songs are Psychedelic)
The Lovin’ Spoonful – Summer in the City (Hot Town) the name Lovin’ Spoonful likely refers to heroin. The Lovin’ Spoonful was a pop music band but this song fits due to the musical passages.
The Crazy World of Arthur Brown The Fire Suite
Wikipedia as being Psychedelic, there is another song on that album, called Come and Buy and in spite of the cynical lyrics fits.
My favorite song is Dark Side of the Moon, almost all the songs on that Album are Psychedelic including Us and Them. Interstellar Overdrive was used for the Lazarium show at The Academy of Science in Golden Gate Park in the late 70s and early 80s. Many Pink Floyd Songs are Psychedelic.
The Red Telephone by a group called Love (This is a song I had never heard of before. It kind of fits so I am giving it a pass, but it’s not extremely Psychedelic)
The Buffalo Springfield – Rock and Roll Woman (not very Psychedelic and reminds me of Crosby, Stills and Nash. This is a hippy song, but still I am going to give it a past and include it.)
Syd Barrett: It’s No Good Trying to place your hand. The song is about an acid trip in which he is talking to a hallucination, but does not have the acid guitar sounds of other features to make it Psychedelic. Expert from the lyrics:
“It’s no good trying to place your hand
Where I can’t see because I understand
That you’re different from me
Yes I can tell
That you can’t be what you pretend”
The hallucination is pretending to be a real person.
Wonderin by Neil Young and The Shocking Pinks
In spite of being part of Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young is a hard rocker or a soft rocker who does not normally make psychedelic music, but this one song I am including because of the Music Video that he made for the song. The song and video came out in 1983, and it was played on MTV. If you have not seen the video go to You Tube and check out, and you will see why it’s Psychedelic.
The Bad List
(These are songs that are included on other lists, but I don’t like them)
Tomorrow Never Knows – The Beatles (Too much going on at once and it sounds like noise, vocals are unispiredly performed by George Harrison)
The American Metaphysical Circus – The United States of America (really bad music)
At The Mountains of Madness – H.P. Lovecraft
(At the Mountains of Madness” (1968), song by the psychedelic rock group H. P. Lovecraft on their second album, H. P. Lovecraft II, really awful music)
A Whiter Shade of Pale – Procol Harum (not Psychedelic but yet always included and played constantly on Sirius Radio, a boring sort of middle of road pop song with some orchestration)
2000 Light Years from Home – The Rolling Stones ( The Rolling Stones wanted to jump on the Psychedelic Band wagon, but did not really make it. They are more of a blues/rock/funk band.
My White Bicycle – Tomorrow (not even from the 60s from the 80s)
Translucent Carriages – Pearls Before Swine (horrible song, painful to listen to)
White Rabbit – Jefferson Airplane (The vocals are very harsh on the song and kind of disturbing. Grace Jones seems to scream them. This song could be a lot better.
Lauren’s Notes: Although my father was a lawyer for the Jefferson Airplane, they failed to be a Psychedelic. If I was forced to pick the song by Jefferson Airplane that I find to be most Psychedelic I would pick “I Saw You Comin’ Back to Me” recorded in 1966 from the album Surrealistic Pillow which was clearly supposed to be a Psychedelic Album. This song stands out due to the long flute musical passages.
In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida – Iron Butterfly (This song is not a terrible song, but it’s not Psychedelic for me, as it’s too bass heavy. It could be Psychedelic if one’s musical taste were more into Heavy Metal. The lyrics were supposed to be “In The Garden of Eden.”)
Revolution 9 – The Beatles
Not Psychedelic and not actually a song, this song is like a bad acid trip. One struggles to make out the bits of dialogue that were created from John Lennon’s experiments with tape recorders and tape loops. The tapes and looped back on each other and many layers are created. This type of track would be easy to create with modern music software, but no one would listen to it, if it was not made by someone big like John Lennon. I have found pages and pages of analyses of Revolution 9 including all of the voices on the track translated. Paul McCartney did not like the track, and he did not want it included on the album, but John insisted
Charles Manson thought that when they screamed the words “Right!” it was actually “Rise!” meaning the black community rising over the white people. (I think this is not true. The song, is in fact, Black Bird in which Paul McCartney Sings “You were only waiting for this moment to arise.” Manson thought the Black Bird was the Black People.)
Please add any songs you like in comments
Notes on messages found when songs are played backwards
Backwards masking is creating a hidden message in the song, when the song is played backwards. Sometimes this is occurs by accident. But, it can be done intentional by recording the lyrics, and then playing them backwards to another tape and then adding that sound to the song.
Stairway to Heaven
Reverse: ‘Oh here’s to my sweet Satan. The one whose little path would make me sad, whose power is Satan. He’ll give those with him 666, there was a little toolshed where he made us suffer, sad Satan.’
I’m So Tired by the Beatles
Forward: Indistinguishable gibberish that john says at the end of it
Reverse: ‘Paul is a dead man. Miss him, miss him, miss him.’
Queen – Another One Bites the Dust
Forward: ‘Another one bites the dust. Another one bites the dust. Another one bites the dust. Another one bites the dust.
Reverse: ‘It’s fun to smoke marijuana. It’s fun to smoke marijuana. It’s fun to smoke marijuana. It’s fun to smoke marijuana.’
Strawberry Fields Forever has a message when played backwards on a phonograph, that says Turn Me On Dead Man. I have tried it and it does work. This is the only one I have tried, it’s very easy to scratch up your record trying to turn the table in the opposite direction by hand.
I Am The Walrus has a mysterious passage at the end. For years I did not know what play it was from. It was from Shakespeare’s King Lear (Act IV, Scene 6), lines 219–222 and 249–262, were added to the song on 29 September 1967 direct from an AM radio Lennon was fiddling with that happened to be receiving the broadcast of the play on the BBC Third Program. The roles were read by Mark Dignam (Gloucester), Philip Guard (Edgar) and John Bryning (Oswald). This foreshadowed along with many other clues that John Lennon was the die by gun violence. John Lennon wrote a song called Happiness is a Warm Gun on the White Album.
The Ballad of John and Yoko has the lyrics:
Christ, you know it ain’t easy
You know how hard it can be
The way things are going
They’re going to crucify me
The way things are going
They’re going to crucify me
John Lennon, at one time, went insane due to drugs, and told the other Beatles that he was Jesus Christ. He also caused a scandal when he said, the Beatles were bigger than Jesus, but that was just working up to the realization that he was Jesus. It’s no big deal. David Bowie thought he was King Arthur, at one point. Why do no David Bowie Songs make the Psychedelic lists of songs. I believe it was because in the 60s, David Bowie was concentrating on Folk Rock and then harder Rock as he worked on Ziggy Stardust. After Bowie retired the character Ziggy, which was a very unpopular decision, he decided to follow in the footsteps of James Brown and created what he called Plastic Soul as seen in his song Young Americans. I believe if David Bowie had wanted to make a Psychedelic Song he would have succeeded. He could make any kind of song he wanted to make in his heavy cocaine use period, but then he became burned out, unfortunately. He also claimed he had to drink a lot after trying to give up cocaine. If I had to pick out one David Bowie song to include, I would pick Ashes to Ashes. This is an early 80s song, but the video that goes with it clearly shows it was meant to be Psychedelic. David Bowie dressed as a Club Kids Clown is walking down the beach with an old lady who is supposed to be his mother who is nagging him to quit using drugs, but he can’t or won’t do it.
There are many other mentions and foreshadowing of John Lennon’s Death in the Beatles Songs and the works he did as a solo artist after the Beatles. Was his death a self fulling prophecy? John Lennon put himself in harm’s way, by signing autographs for fans without security protection in front of his apartment at the Dakota Apartments in New York City.
On my third year of gardening in Ukiah, I have learned a lot. There is a narrow time in which you must plant your garden for the year. The winter is cold and the summer is hot, so the spring time is when everything has to go in the ground. If you plant too late the sun and heat will kill everything that sprouts. The summer is over 100 degrees daily for about three months.
Every year I have tried to grow them without success. The first year, I put them in pots because the ground was too hard and rocky to grow anything. They died, and when one of them was able to have a fruit, the skin slipt in the heat and ants came and covered them. The second year I got one tomatoe plant from Home Depot called Compact and planted it. It was terrible, it would not grow or fruit. This year I have planted these seeds.
Seeds of Change beef steak tomato seeds
I planted half of them directly into the plot and the other half in pots. I will see which ones germinate.
Every year I try pumpkins
They did not work the first year in pots, they got too hot and died.
The soil in Ukiah is all hard clay with many rocks. Plus my soil was extra bad, compared with other people’s soil.
So the first year I could not get the soil good enough to plant in ground, and there was a lot of weed trees, a huge mess of weeds and it took too much time. I missed the spring planting time. Year one was a failure.
Year two I got some pumpkins to grow, but they were small. I call it a success away. The ones in the front lived, the ones in the back died.
This year I am planting Giant Pumpkins
I have yet to try corn
Last year I grew sun flowers
I grew the Devils Lettuce the first year and it did ok, but it was too bitter to actually eat, so I composted it.
I tried to grow hot and sweet peppers, but it did not really work out. The plants were very weak and they would not hold up the fruits.
I am not mentioning, I grew a lot of decorative types of flowers
I once lived in San Francisco and I had success with potatoes and carrots
The carrots I grew in Ukiah, all had a bad taste and were not edible.
